Aggressive cleaner
Had an awful experience with the cleaning woman in the changing rooms at the Wakefeild gym, Unknowingly my shampoo must of leaked through my gym bag onto the floor which I never noticed, and I was shouted at aggressively by the cleaner and told "Have you done that!!" I tried to clean the shampoo up and was shouted at again, and had my hand almost slapped away by an inch when she snapped and said "NO" I will do it. All the ladies in the room were looking at us in shock, and I was so embarrassed. I personally enjoy the gym, and I find the Reception team great every time they speak to me. So this was such a disappointing experience, and has left me shaken to be honest.
Happy with everything 1st & sesh visit👌
Joined and 1st day session today and extremely pleased with the Pool/Sauna/Jacuzzi facilities and the work-out areas with the changing areas also spot on at the Preston site👍
Big thanks to James who gave me a tour round the place first off, explained everything and then brought me on board - Very impressive and extremely helpful with his straightforward, no nonsense approach, a great lad👌
I use the Preston Health Club
I use the Preston Health Club and generally the apparatus and pool are ok, but what is noticeable is the rapid increase in the number of members, which I believe has reached around 7000 and there seems to be no cut off point. This creates extra use of all the facilities and booking classes is almost impossible. Cleanliness and hygiene suffers because of the impact of such a large membership and It's as if the business is being set up to sell.

Unfortunately the classes get full very quickly. The app at present has crashed for over a week. It is very inconvenient having to phone them up only to be told classes are full. I'm beginning to wish I had not joined the club. I am in the Wrexham club.
So this isn't about the gym itself but…
So this isn't about the gym itself but rather the outside of the building located at Silkwood park, Wakefield. It's really inconsiderate parking on a public footpath and just about blocking the whole path . What if someone with a disability, or a mum with a pushchair was wanting to get past they couldn't. Idiots
Incompetent and greedy
Over the years, I had a repeated negative experience with regards to membership admin, but I kept going.. it was somewhat convenient, although never totally satisfied with the classes and the poor standard of the place (not hygienic and modern enough). However the last incident put me off forever. Me and my husband asked to split our join membership, as he wished to cancel his membership, but wanted to stay in. We spoke to the staff by the reception who assured us all will be “sorted”. They asked to cancel on the app, which we did. Few months later I noticed I am no longer a member (I was not actively going to the gym as I was ill, so did not realise they cut me off). I rang to explain what happened and that I want my membership to be reinstated, DUE TO THEIR ERROR. On 20th February 2026 I spoke with a chap called Jack who said it will be sorted and assured me I would not have to pay the re joining fee. He promised to ring me back and never did. He even said I could start using the gym immediately. A week after still no one called me. I went to the gym personally on 27th February 2026 and spoke with a lady who said she was a Membership Manager. I explained the whole incident again. She couldn't be less interested. She was completely immune, and kept repeating the default statement that I would have to pay a new rate and a joining fee. She failed to comment on what the staff promised in previous communication. Very greedy indeed… After so many years of being a member and being cut off through their sheer incompetence, I will not join Total Fitness in Wigan again. Prices are sky high (current fee is £57 per month!, the staff totally incompetent , and let’s be honest - the place is not great at all for that amount of money: dirty water in the pools (I stepped on earrings and cut my feet once, and always see floating dirt in the water). Showers are outdated with cold water, and the main gym area smelly. No aircon in the hot summer months either. Most of all the incompetence, inflexibility and greediness of this place certainly does not justify the price. After writing this honest review I even feel grateful that I was let down today! There are so many nicer and better value options elsewhere! Goodbye total fitness Wigan!
It constantly crashes
It constantly crashes and tells me ive lost connectivity even though i haven't. Its a poor set up and could be much user friendly. I dont understand why you cant just view all the classes rather then having to select a date or class! Its like an app that was created in 1993
Car park is a nightmare.not enough…
Car park is a nightmare.not enough spaces.you come to the gym to relax but you start your visit with stress. I wish TF realise that the car park isn't growing and stop signing new people. Instead focussing in maintaining the club, the equipments? everything is run down... every time you tell them something isn't working, they tell you they are aware of it but not bloody fixing it. If I run a place like this,I will have an army daily fixing things.
Awful!
Staff are ignorant.
Gyms are scruffy.
Threatening members.
Unclean.
Walls and wires chipped and exposed.
Dirty pools.
I was threatened in the gym for using a piece of equipment whilst someone was supposedly using it in a circuit, first thing on a Monday (I mean, come on).
Just all-around awfulness.
How can a gym justify putting there…
How can a gym justify putting there monthly fee up by £6 a month when everything is out dated or not working absolute joke of a gym, this is no David Lloyd’ gym it’s total fitness where most things are out dated or broken, an over crowded gym with 10,000 members each paying £63 a month from march
Continuing saga with a poor customer care
Continuing saga with a poor, arrogant, misleading company. After taking nearly £1600 out of our account without permission they finally after 2 weeks, over the phone, said they would refund 11 months worth of membership but not 12. I asked them to email that proposal over but stressed i would still argue the money that they refused to give back. The head office e-mailed my wife to say they were refunding the money, no mention of withholding a months value so we expected that they had finally got a conscience and decided to give a full refund. No not the case, so my wife complained. On the back of that I received a phone call from the Wigan branch to say that I had agreed with the partial refund to which I replied and said that I hadn't because I would still fight the unnecessary charge and there was no mention in the e-mail of it being a partial refund. He said he did not get e-mails from the head office which further proves how poor the communication is along with the lack of customer care. Be careful everyone if you are thinking of joining this gym, there are plenty of other options out there.

Abusive member behaviour to a newborn baby
Myself, my partner and our 9 week old baby visited Total Fitness Middlesbrough for a look around the pool & to see how my baby reacted to the water before signing up for their baby swimming lessons.
When we entered the pool an aquafit class was due to start in just over 5 minutes. The instructor spoke to us and stated our baby wasn’t allowed in the other two pools, only this pool and that we could stay in the pool but the music may be loud and we might want to stay nearer the back of the pool to avoid splashes. This all seemed reasonable and we explained we just wanted to try our baby in the pool before signing her up for lessons. The instructor was very friendly and welcoming.
We didn’t intend to stay in the pool long regardless but unfortunately after less than 5 minutes of being in the water an old woman named Barbara entered the pool and almost brushed up against me, we presumed she was just unsteady in the water but she then intentionally set herself up for the aquafit class right next to us (we were in the back corner of the pool against the steps/ walls, could not be any further out of the way). The pool was large and there was volumes of space unoccupied, so many places she could have joined in the class- and nearer to every other person participating. This woman then proceeded to purposefully splash pool water onto my 9 week old baby, this was my baby’s first experience of a pool and should have been a happy memory. The class instructor was very helpful and told her to stop however she continued. This woman was shouting “THEY SHOULDN’T BE HERE” repeatedly, absolutely embarrassing. The instructor then walked right around the pool and came to tell Barbara again to stop her behaviour, she obviously didn’t. My partner also told her to stop and move, she had a sarky response that she wouldn’t.
We left to save the hassle as I’m not going to argue with a scumbag when I have my newborn with me. It was evident from the beginning that Barbara had a problem with us being in the pool.
Grace, Chloe & Emily- all the ladies working on membership desks were lovely and very understanding about the situation. They knew who it was straight away with a brief description, which speaks volumes in itself. They stated they would speak to her but realistically if a member has caused repeated issues with multiple people then she should not be allowed in the facility.
It’s a shame that establishments put up with unsociable behaviour from their members when they’re clearly known to them.
Barbara with the ridiculous Purple rinse is absolutely vile. Rough as toast and clearly a very unhappy old woman.
The ladies were super helpful on providing info on the lessons too however this experience was not positive due to this woman’s unsociable abusive behaviour. Definitely makes you think twice about spending £60/ month on baby swimming lessons.
Would Total Fitness have accepted legal liability if this woman’s unsociable and abusive behaviour had escalated and my baby was physically harmed in their premises? Doubt it.
The equivalent of going out for dinner and leaving hungry
TF Lincs. Has it's up's and downs, like any gym.. sure
Been here a fair few months now:
Downsides:
- App is near impossible to work + Pilates always full, struggle to book
- Wattbike's are never really in service, and if they are, they're not calibrated correctly
- Hydro pool has significantly lost temp past few weeks
- Mens showers are v often dirty on the floor
- Showers are either v warm or cold
Upsides:
- Staff generally sound
- Large gym space
Pay-wise, I feel you get what you pay for end of the day
Customer service is appalling
Customer service is appalling. I cancelled as per the contract and they started making up extra T&C clauses to get an extra payment.
This is a shocking company who try to…
This is a shocking company who try to make money, i didn’t opt in for renewal and when I tried cancelling straight away they were not willing to sort the matter in fact they wanted to charge extra. Stay away from this company. Thieves in all shape and form. Laura is super rude.
I’m leaving Total Fitness Wilmslow and…
I’m leaving Total Fitness Wilmslow and I’ll be telling people to avoid this place completely. From my own experience, the facilities have gone downhill badly. The showers are lukewarm at best — never properly warm — so you can’t wash comfortably. The changing rooms are cold too, so you’re standing there freezing after a barely-warm shower. For the prices they charge, it’s a joke.
I’ve complained more than once about the shower temperature and the cold changing rooms, and nothing ever gets sorted. Prices keep going up, yet they can’t even provide the basics. The shower dividers and doors are rotten and falling apart, and instead of repairing them properly they’ve slapped up a cheap shower curtain. The shower gel is empty half the time and the whole area looks neglected.
They’ve also made “promises” about improvements before, but in my experience nothing ever changes. I even stopped using the gym completely, yet they still made me pay an extra month because “it’s in my contract.” Make it make sense — I’m pretty sure warm showers, basic maintenance and a usable environment are in their contract too, but they can’t provide any of that. They expect members to stick to the contract while they ignore their own obligations.
Customer service is no better. No solutions, no effort, just hiding behind clauses.
And then there’s the guest-pass mess. My membership included a free monthly guest pass. I brought a friend in, only to be told it had been “stopped” and that I’d been informed. I hadn’t. I pulled up every single email and proved it. It was embarrassing for both of us, and I ended up paying a silly amount just to get them in. Now they’ve sent a weak email saying they’re “introducing” a new £10 guest pass system. Let’s not forget they sold memberships with a free guest pass included and then removed it without any notice.
Honestly, based on everything I’ve experienced, I can’t see this gym lasting much longer. Even cheaper gyms manage warmer facilities, working showers, better cleanliness, better equipment and better communication. I’m glad to be done with this place, and I’ll be actively telling people to stay well away.
Bike left & non existent customer service
My son’s bike was stolen from outside the gym. They couldn’t be less interested. Happy to enroll new members & take their money but not to prioritise the safety of members & their property. Lighting outside is also awful. All six lights not working in the walkway where the incident happened.
Wakefield Total Fitness had been…
Wakefield Total Fitness had been promoted earlier this year as having been through a full refurbishment, which I have now discovered at my cost to be a complete fabrication.
I joined the gym a couple of days ago, and when I enquired over the phone about a monthly ongoing membership, I asked if it was possible to avoid the usual £25 joining fee which I felt was excessive. I was told that my timing was very fortunate because head office had earlier that same day introduced an offer which meant there was no joining fee up until the end of October.
I therefore travelled to the gym and we then completed an online registration because the membership team said their in house system wasn't responding, but when it came to the card payment I was asked for the £25 fee. I queried this and was told that the offer didn't include the monthly membership package, which was not what I had been told over the phone. Rather than feel embarrassed by the circumstances, I felt that I had no option other than to continue and pay this extra charge. So a total of £79 for one month.
I have now subsequently attended the gym on 2 occasions, and I am extremely shocked and very disappointed with the condition of the gym as a whole. Almost without exception, all the machines are extremely rusty and the free weights racking system is also terribly rusty. There is no excuse for this. Even budget gyms are presented in a much better state. The equipment must all be in excess of 20 yrs old and certainly not to the standard I would expect from a national group such as Total Fitness. This is certainly not the standard that I was led to believe. Maybe the cardio equipment was replaced earlier in the year, but I don't know how they can possibly refer to this as an extensive refit.
Additionally, I am not happy with the standard of the men's changing rooms and shower areas. Once again this is all very dated and urgently in need of a professional refit. I have spent the last 20+ yrs as a member of their various competitors gyms, and all of these have been far superior in both standards and value for money.
I feel cheated by the whole process from start to finish , and have sent an email to their head office with my comments, to which there has been no reply.
I could not recommend this gym to anyone, and I just wish I'd looked at all the very damning reviews before I gave this terrible business my hard earned money.
Update 12Nov.
I was so annoyed and disappointed I sent an email to Sophie Lawler the CEO. Whilst she never replied the email was passed onto the membership team. Eventually a phone call from someone at Wakefield but this was a complete waste of time. I believe it was the assistant manager but she was hopeless. I asked her if she had seen the shower areas and she said she hadn't. So clearly she wasn't even very interested in the overall condition of the gym. She promised to speak to the membership team who had misled me on the £25 fee and get back to me by the end of the week. This is now 2 weeks later and still no further contact. I also recontacted Sophie Lawler 7 days ago to update her just how appalling their customer service is, and clearly she doesn't give a damn either.
Avoid this terrible mismanaged and poor business at all costs, it doesn't deserve your your custom.
Too old
This gym is completely outdated and not worth the high membership cost. The equipment looks like it hasn’t been replaced or properly maintained in twenty years. Many machines are broken, handles are torn, resistance bands snapped — it’s a mess. The place feels like time stopped decades ago while gyms around the world have moved on.
Everywhere else you go — Poland, Germany, France — fitness clubs are modern, clean, and automated. You just scan your wristband and go. Here? Still using old-school padlocks and worn-out lockers. The facilities are crowded, you wait forever for equipment, and it’s almost impossible to complete a proper workout.
Honestly, it’s embarrassing how far behind gyms in the UK have fallen. Total Fitness should be investing in upgrades, not just collecting membership fees. One star, and that’s only because zero isn’t an option.
