Use extreme caution when dealing with this company

I would advise anyone considering using this company to exercise extreme caution and make sure that the price, scope of work and business details are all confirmed in writing before allowing work to start.

The company approached us by cold calling at our home. We were told that they had been working for a neighbour and that the neighbour had suggested they speak to us. When we subsequently checked with our neighbour, he told us that he had not agreed to them approaching us on his behalf. This immediately made us uncomfortable about the way the work had been obtained.

We agreed verbally to driveway cleaning/re-sanding and some tree trimming. During our dealings with the company, I found the sales approach persistent and at times aggressive, which made the experience uncomfortable.

I was not provided with evidence of public liability insurance. I am not saying that the company does not have insurance, only that evidence of cover was not provided to me. This was particularly concerning given that tree work had been discussed.

I was also not provided with a written quotation before the work started, despite the company having approached us at our home, and I did not receive an invoice for the work.

Based on my own experience, I would recommend that prospective customers do their own checks and insist on a written quotation setting out the full price and scope of work, evidence of appropriate insurance, and confirmation that a proper invoice will be provided before agreeing to any work. Do not pay in cash.

Poor service, hustled, pressured

Don't use these guys, save yourself the headache.

I called Thames Side after receiving their flyer in the post. I had some weed clearance and tree trimming, and I asked them (and another reputable local firm) to quote.

On the day of the quote, they said they were available immediately because they were due to do another job in the area but it wasn't ready. The original quote dropped £400 to be able to do it on the day. I was keen to have the work done, so I accepted this offer. The scope was to trim several trees and bushes and to remove brambles.

The trees and bushes were largely trimmed, though the cuts seemed haphazard and not considering the health of the different trees. Some bits were missed, and they also trimmed a tree and some flowering jasmine in their speed. Some branches etc remained after their "clearup".

The brambles they did next to nothing with. I asked for them to be cleared, they said they'd chopped them and sprayed with weed killer and that I had to wait for that to take effect, and the trimmed branches would "provide. cover". I took them at their word.

Part way through they pressured me to pay in cash - I said no. I had to be very firm on this.

At "completion" I was asked to transfer money to multiple accounts. Again, I had to be very firm and repeatedly refuse before they (he, Tony) would let this go.

I was promised an invoice, but the main guy (Tony) stood over me to make sure I transferred the money via bank transfer as he was there. While I was trying to do the transfer in my phone, he kept peppering me with inane, unrelated questions - what sort of food do you eat, I like Indian, what do you think about X etc. I don't know what this was designed to achieve - stop me thinking or asking questions? It made me feel very uncomfortable and I just wanted him away at that point.

I never received the invoice promised, and after the first time of asking Tony blocked me on WhatsApp.

The brambles remained, and grew. They cut about one of the brambles but I ended up doing the rest myself.

I felt incredibly dissatisfied with both the work they did and the way I was treated by Tony. I do not think they are above board. I am only giving two stars instead of one because they did actually do some trimming and take most of the trimmings away.

★★☆☆☆

I hired Thames Side Tree Surgery & Landscaping to carry out work on my conifers, holly and a large ceanothus tree.

The experience left me disappointed, frustrated and significantly out of pocket.

The original quote started at £1,500, then dropped to £1,300 and ultimately £800 after negotiation. Personally, I found this uncomfortable. I prefer contractors who provide a clear fixed price rather than pricing that appears open to bargaining.

One of the main reasons I hired the company was because I wanted approximately three feet removed from the tops of my conifers to stop them growing taller as well as to cut the branches which were growing over the fence into the neighbours garden. I had done most of the trimming on my holly and conifer trees. After the work was completed, I discovered this had not been done. I was then told that topping the conifers would cause multiple new stems to grow and therefore was not advisable. Had I been told before the work commenced that the conifers would not be reduced in height, I would not have proceeded with the job.

The situation became even more confusing when I later raised the issue of the conifer sides overhanging neighbouring gardens. I was reminded that these had been discussed during the quotation process, yet was then given a different interpretation of what was included.

Once work began on the ceanothus, I was shown dead branches, decay and instability within the tree and was quoted an additional £1,000 to remove it. I accepted this because I did not want to leave a potentially unsafe tree in place. To be fair, the tree was removed and the waste was taken away, although the trunk was left at my request so that another plant could be trained against it.

My biggest concern was the lack of care shown inside my home.

Branches were dragged through my flat, leaving long marks and scratches on the walls. Although some surface marks can be wiped away, scratches remain visible when light hits the walls. I now face redecorating costs to repair the damage. Some of the affected walls run up an open staircase spanning two floors, making repainting neither simple nor inexpensive.

No apology was offered and no attempt was made to clean the walls before leaving. I was told "this is what is expected."

Leaves and debris were also left in my kitchen, on the stairs and in the communal hallway. When I queried this, I was told that bringing in equipment could damage carpets. I have had substantial garden work carried out before and have always found that professional contractors leave the inside of the property clean when they leave.

What concerned me most was the use of a petrol leaf blower inside my flat to blow out the bulk of the debris from dragging the branches through the property. The property was left smelling strongly of exhaust fumes. When I raised concerns, I was told that this was standard practice provided there was ventilation. Whether others do it or not, I did not consider this appropriate inside a customer's home.

I was also encouraged to pay a substantial part of the bill in cash and was asked to visit a cash machine when I did not have enough cash available. I found this uncomfortable and unprofessional.

To be fair, after I complained, the company did return and cut the tops of the conifers. However, I was first offered a "free trim" in six months' time instead. In my view, this would simply have been completing work that I believed should have been included from the outset and for which I had already paid.

The team were polite and the ceanothus was removed, but the combination of changing prices, disagreements over what was included, damage to my property, poor clean-up, petrol fumes inside the house and the overall handling of the job has left me feeling that the service fell well below the standard I expected.

Based on my experience, I would not use this company again.
