"You will never miss anything important" - yet I got penalties and a court summons
I paid USD 733.95 (over 50% more than mainland China agents charge for the same service, which also include company chops) to incorporate a Hong Kong company through Startupr in early 2024. My two-year experience:
They filed the wrong business nature on the NNC1 despite my explicit written instructions ("information technology services" became "import and export trade") - filed without checking with me even though I was in Hong Kong that day and had asked to review first. After I raised it, they quoted me fees to fix their own mistake.
Their website promises "you do not miss anything important ever." In reality, no reminder came before my business-registration renewal deadline; the penalty was assessed on 25 April 2025; and their renewal reminders only started 10 July 2025 - then weekly, dozens of them. The emails asking me to pay were relentless; the one reminder that could have prevented the penalty never came in time. Penalties accumulated and my company received a court summons (ESS 14209/2026).
Their package doesn't include company chops - never disclosed, not on the website, not on the invoice, not once in two years. When they finally mentioned it, it was in the email forwarding my court summons, offering to sell me one for USD 40 (I need three: USD 120). Mainland competitors include the full chop set for free.
Formal complaints in June 2026 were denied and deflected. Verifiable filings: Companies Registry (TCSP Licensing Section, 29 June 2026); Consumer Council, Case CC_Web_0000309353 (1 July 2026).
If you are a mainland client, look at mainland-based agents first. With Startupr the extra cost bought me less service and more risk.
