My partner and I decided to join a guided tour to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with Soviet Tours last April. The experience was great! Trip coordinator was very experienced and passionate providing us very helpful insights and notions to understand the countries we visited. The tour was very well planned and we found such a great group we really enjoyed the experience from the first day till the last! We also came back home with a better understanding of what passed through centuries in central Asia and what the Soviet period meant to them and the heritage they are still experiencing. We can only thank Soviet Tours passionate and competent team if we could achieve such understanding!

Dopo svariati anni di attesa grazie a Soviet Tours abbiamo finalmente coronato il piccolo sogno di visitare uno dei paesi più misteriosi del mondo: il Turkmenistan! Un doppio volo di Turkish Airlines ci ha condotto nella capitale Ashgabat dove, sbrigate le pratiche di visto, siamo stati accolti dal team organizzato da Soviet Tours. Tutto è stato perfetto, rispettati pienamente i programmi di viaggio e le aspettative. Lo staff in loco è stato sempre premuroso di sapere se volevamo vedere o fare qualcosa in più spiegandoci le varie possibilità. Had a wonderful trip through Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia with Soviet tours.
Focus was on Yugoslav era modernist architecture and the many monuments (spomenik) that commemorate the fight against nazi occupation during ww2.
The tour was expertly led by Donald Niebyl - who's behind the Spomenik database and local guides Marco and Ninoslav.

Someone once said that all the great evils of the world ended in "-isms". That includes communism, fascism... and tourism. As a rule of thumb, this may well be true, but Soviet Tours is the exception to it. These are the few, precious travel experiences still on sale, that enrich one's soul.
I came across Soviet Tours through one of its partner independent travel agencies in Italy, with which I travelled to Sakartvelo (Georgia). That was a profound, heart-warming and eye-opening experience that left me yearning for more. And so, I signed up for a tour of Moldova and Pridnestrovie with Gianluca.
At barely 40 years old, Gianluca is a polyglot and an outstanding professional, and may well know more about the Soviet world than many university professors combined, yet he is approachable, unassuming, and so generous in dishing out pearls of Soviet wisdom, often off the top of his head. I would go as far as saying that Gianluca stands to tourism in foreign countries as Richard Feynman stands to physics: there probably were greater geniuses than him, but only he could weave the loose strands of the subject matter in a coherent, compelling and understandable story.
And that is really what it boils down to: you would be wasting your money travelling to former soviet countries without a knowledgeable guide that is able to put everything in historical and emotional context. That is what Gianluca & his partners (just as good!) do, and it is a truckload of added value.
I suppose the clientele of Soviet Tours self-selects somewhat too: your travel companions will likely be people with interesting stories (not the social media kind!) to tell, and with whom you could likely build deeper connections.
I cannot recommend Soviet Tours & its partner agencies enough. In an ideal world - a Soviet one, of course - today's entire private tourism industry would be dismantled and replaced with a state monopoly. I'd put Gianluca & his colleagues in charge XD !

Well organised private tour with all bureaucracy papers and visa procedures cleared and transparent to me, zero bad surprise during three weeks around Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, not the most easy (specially the first one!) destinations. Our Local guides were also fundamental to have actual inside of the countries. Very suggested travel company in the former Soviet Union republics.

I've traveled to both Moldova/Transnistria and Georgia/Armenia with Soviet Tours, along with a day trip in the ex-GDR. Gianluca is THE reference for all things Soviet. His niche knowledge and network of local contacts is impressive. He will customize your trip to your liking with a deep care for details. Will travel again with Soviet Tours for sure!

For a long time, I had a dream of visiting Baikonur and when I decided to do so I did not hesitate to call Soviet Tours. I don't regret it. Gianluca organized a perfect private tour adjusted to my needs and budget, with equal parts of free time to carry out my photographic work and guided tours of historic sites, including the witnessing of an impressive launch of a Soyuz rocket in the Kazakh desert.

Fantastic experiences in Georgia (2023) and Uzbekistan (2024). My guides throughout Georgia and in Tashkent and Nukus provided especially nuanced and rich insight. I look forward to my next Soviet Tours adventure and have been enthusiastically recommending the company to like-minded friends.

I've visited six countries with Soviet Tours. The attention to detail in planning the trips was outstanding, and Gianluca was always responsive to individualized itinerary requests and changes. Top-notch local guides on the ground where I traveled to. The company has provided some of my best travel experiences.

Ich bin bereits zweimal mit Soviet Tours gereist - das erste Mal in die Mongolei und das zweite Mal nach Venezuela. Ich war beide Male sehr begeistert von der super Organisation und Kommunikation im Vorfeld sowie den hervorragenden und professionellen Tour-Guides vor Ort. Ich habe mich stets sicher und gut informiert gefühlt, auch als alleinreisende Frau. Das Wichtigste war allerdings, dass ich eine aufregende und interessante Zeit in zwei unglaublich schönen und ungewöhnlichen Reisezielen hatte. Gerne wieder!

I visited Kyrgyzstan through this tour company in April and they provided the best guides and driver. In November I returned to Central Asia, Uzbekistan in particular and used their services again, and it was also very good and smooth. They provide guides and itineraries that are highly specialized (usually concerning Soviet era history and architecture) but they also coordinate to provide guides for places with other historical eras, for example the ancient cities of Uzbekistan. Coordination and communication and payment is always smooth and easy through email and other messaging apps.

I’ve traveled with a couple companies to uncommon destinations but definitely Soviet tours has the best itineraries and guides, they actually care about the locals and the art; the stays have been good and the days are well planned without making things rushed.

The only thing is that their website is not always up to date and there’s tours that just don’t happen often. I’m looking forward to joining more adventures with Soviet Tours but I have to wait until I hear back from them to know if the tour I like is happening.

I was keen to check out Soviet Tours because of my interest in Russian and Soviet history and culture but you don't have to be to take one of these tours. They suit both the Soviet history buff and non-buff alike. I have now taken 3 trips with them, since 2022, and they were all I could want and ask for! Guides were always of the highest quality and focused on my safety and enjoyment. Gianluca was always very responsive with my questions and concerns. I would highly recommend Soviet Tours for your next off-the-beaten track holiday!

Highly reliable company and uber-attentive service. Travelled around Iraq with them. The logistics were smooth and the tour content quite unique in comparison to other itineraries on the market (e.g. a strong focus on the 1960s/1970s modernist architectural heritage of the country).

Soviet Tours are the business. We could not have asked for a better, more involved and experienced company to organise our trip to the North Caucasus. We were a little apprehensive, knowing so little about the area, but Gianluca and Soviet Tours took complete care of us. They listened to our requests and crafted a magnificent tour which included everything we wanted to see. The accommodation was outstanding, the itinerary superb, but best of all were the guides - Mahgomed and Abdullah - who took consummate care of us. I can wholeheartedly say it was one of the best travel experiences we have ever had, and our lives were significantly enriched by it. We would recommend Soviet Tours a thousand times over. I've used soviet tours 3 times now, around the Balkans, central Asia, and Moldova, and every time has been top notch. Always well planned itineraries to unusual locations with great guides, and while the main focus is on socialist heritage there is much more to them than this. I would strongly recommend them, and will be traveling with them again.

On the flight to Sofia there was a tiny voice in my head asking "what if this is all some complicated scam?" .. that voice was extinguished the moment we met our guide Evgeny!

We were so impressed with him, 'from airport to airport' nothing was an effort or a problem, he wasn't stressed about anything that we noticed, the tour went at the 'right pace' and he was happy to be flexible to suit our needs.

He is so passionate about Bulgaria and the things he showed us. The fact that he grew up under Communism - I think he said to age 7 - added to our experience as he told us stories about singing songs to Lenin in kindergarten.

Highlights: Buzludzha (of course!), the hot springs and our walk in the forest on the last morning before heading back to Sofia. And the urbex.

Hotels: I liked them all, although Sarah said if we go back to Plovdiv that she'd prefer something in the middle of the city. My only complaint is the trams start very early in Sofia and the windows at that hotel don't keep much noise out.

The food was fantastic everywhere, all so fresh, and the best meal - more about location than anything else - was at the little place next to the waterfront (sorry, I hardly remember any place names).

This trip has certainly whetted my appetite to see more former Communist countries and I will be in touch when I'm ready to book the next adventure!
