No satellite phone when a hiker was injured; the trip fell well short of what was advertised
We booked Quechuas Expeditions' 4-day Salkantay glamping trek based on what their website promises. Our guide Henry was kind and did his best. Our concerns are with the company.
Safety: One of our group was injured on the trail as it was getting dark and could barely walk. When we went for help, we learned our guide had no satellite phone, even though their website has a whole page about carrying one. On a remote high-altitude trek, that's the one thing you're trusting them on.
What we were promised vs. what we got:
"Relax and shower after a long day": Night 1 had no hot water for anyone, and the fire ran out of wood by 10 PM in freezing temperatures. Night 2's water was lukewarm.
"You will never be hungry with us": Meat portions weren't enough for one serving per person, and breakfast on day 3 had no protein. When we asked for eggs, we were charged for them. One dinner wasn't ready until 8:15 PM after a 12-hour day that started at 4:30 AM.
"Private, peaceful" sky domes: We were woken at 6 AM, two hours before our scheduled wake-up, by traffic and barking dogs, and staff did nothing about it.
Logistics: We'd arranged ahead of time for the company to store our suitcases. The pickup crew didn't know about it, and we had to leave our luggage at a random house at 5 AM. In Aguas Calientes, we were told to pay for a hotel room that was already included, and we waited 30+ minutes while it got sorted out.
"No hidden costs": Add-on charges drained our cash, so we couldn't tip the staff the way we wanted to.
We wrote to the company politely before posting anything and asked for a partial refund. They declined.
If you're considering them I encourage you to book anywhere else.
