An authentically awesome Canadian experience

Recently joined Out Here on a 'Big One' trip with my partner and had a great time. We're on study exchange from the UK (at U of T) and really wanted to get to know at least a few parts of the country as the locals do, and try lots of different activities, and hang out with other travellers with a similar outlook, and all without breaking the bank. The package offered by Out Here was just what we were looking for.

Our guide was superb, really knew every nook and cranny on the route, and was generally prepared to accommodate if there was something we wanted to see or do that wasn't on the day's agenda. But that wasn't much, as the trip was really packed with great activities. Our favourite part was seeing the awesome wildlife - actual Moose on the Cabot trail! And the cute deers in the Laurentians! But the best was definitely the whales we saw on the kayaking trip out of Tadoussac - a real once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We also enjoyed the city and smaller town stops - particularly old Quebec City and Charlottetown - where our guide introduced us to some great hangouts with local live music and great food and BEER! Not sure about the poutine though! Chips in gravy - with cheese? And the stay at Sea Shack at Gaspesie was awesome - a great party with a live band followed by a chance to camp on the beach under the stars. I don't if this is how Canadians always roll on their summer holiday, but it's definitely how we'll remember our Canadian experience.

This trip was such a unique an…

This trip was such a unique an unforgettable experience. I was with my partner on the 26 days Big One tour this June and I couldn't recommend it enough. It offers a wonderful mix between wilderness and adventure, city and culture, partying, great food, making friends and socialising, activities and sports, beautiful beaches. Essentially, whatever you want to do on this trip you will find it, and you may also discover things that you didn't expect to totally love, but you will!

Jared arranged everything in advance for the trip so that you just have to make sure you show up nice and early on the first day to get on the bus! As he has organised most things such as the route, your accommodation etc. you can relax and research what you are going to do in the next place. The schedule is really good and the bus moves on every few days so that you never spend too long in one place, and your scenery is changing all the time. You never get bored because you are often moving to a new city or some countryside that involves an adrenaline filled activity.

You will travel for the duration of your tour (some people select shorter ones, but most people seemed to be going with the Big One) on a big and comfortable bus with plenty of space to sleep during long journeys and space to store your personal items above your head, plus putting your bigger backpack or holdall in the back part of the bus. I would recommend packing lightly with quick dry clothing but there's definitely also space for your city clothes etc. The tours are made up of fellow like minded travellers, our group all got along very quickly and we have many great memories with our new international friends from the bus.

The accommodation is great! The tour starts with a 2 night stay in Algonquin National Park so make sure you have your camping bits at the top of your bag, saves searching around later on in your tent as you look for your hiking socks etc! After the first couple of nights, many of the places you will stay are HI hostels so make sure that if you don't already have one, you get a HI card during your first stay. It saves 10% and can give you some discounts in the towns too. All of the hostels are really clean and it's easy to get a shower etc. They often provide towels which is really handy. Some also have laundry if you wish. Some hostels will provide you with an experience to remember in the best possible way because they're quirky and different: Sea Shack and Taddousac in particular. Make sure you go with an open mind and a friendly smile and you will have the best time ever. As I was with my boyfriend we often had private rooms, which I would suggest are great for couples who want a bit of time to themselves now and again, but for solo travellers the dorms are much more fun.

The activities are brilliant! Many of them are pre planned by Out Here working with local businesses in the area, so you get a really authentic feel and get to meet some interesting local characters too. Ones to mention are rafting, which is a high adrenaline activity from a small company in the area with a lot of experience on the Ottawa River, Canyoning with some really friendly and fun French Canadian people and Via Ferrata which is an exciting rock climbing experience in a picturesque waterfalls area.

When you are in the cities you have the time to yourself mostly, and Jared is also helpful in letting you know any local recommendations from places he has been or his friends have suggested. It's great to have some time to go and see things at your own pace and follow your area of interest, whether it's museums, shopping, trying new cuisine, or testing out the local beer selections!

Jared also takes care to curate some local experiences which are also very unique and memorable in their own way. For example, visiting the well known Malpeque Oyster Barn and having a lesson in oyster shucking, eating lobsters with a local farmer, and the Prince Edward Island Potato Museum. They're always quirky and unusual things that are a chance to understand more about the local culture and way of life.

Also unforgettable was the scenery - including the peaks above Gaspesie, the forests of Algonquin, the sand dunes at Tadoussac, driving the Cabot Trail, and hiking in the Laurentians. We saw whales, a moose and a baby moose which was extraordinary.

Jared, our tour leader, is a very relaxed and friendly person who works really hard to make sure that everybody is having a good time. I would love to return to Out Here Travel to do another tour and I think that goes for everybody else who was on our bus too.

My trip with Out Here was fantastic…

My trip with Out Here was fantastic from start to finish. It really is the best way to see Canada without having to worry about hiring a car, sorting accommodation, learning your way around the roads - all this is already sorted thanks to the really helpful guide, Jared.

This guy really knows his stuff and has a very flexible itinerary mapped out which can flex and change depending on what the group wants to do - you have so much freedom to do what you want whilst also considering the best things to do in each place.

I didn't do the full trip due to other plans and commitments, but Jared was very helpful in helping mer to arrange a meet up along route so I could join on to the trip so far through. I received a warm welcome and continued on our adventure with the rest of my travel mates - it was so good!

Would definitely recommend Out Here to anybody wanting to explore eastern Canada - in my mind it really is the best way and I would definitely do it again.

10/10!

The most authentic Canadian experience!

What an amazing trip! I was unsure at first what it was going to be like since Out Here Canada is pretty new and a 26-day trip requires a lot of time and energy. It turned out being incredible. Jared, our tour leader, really invested his time in showing us special locations in Canada that even most locals have never seen. He would give us the opportunity to stop at every possible scenic spot available along our scenic drives including waterfalls, countless photographic gorgeous lighthouses, cute artsy towns by the water..etc. He definitely made sure we did not miss any chances to see something beautiful.

Canada is a huge place, so I was concerned what the day-to-day bus schedule was going to be driving around during the trip. I turned out loving the bus - I called it our "time machine" the whole trip. The bus was comfortable, cozy, spacious (all of us ended up having 2 seats for ourselves the whole trip), and made it bearable to relax on long drive days, which were really not too bad at all. Jared made sure we stopped every 2-3 hours tops, and always allowed us to stop for a bathroom/stretch break if needed. Even on the long drive days, we were still able to stop and see something cool at some point most of the time.

I must say my favorite part of the whole trip was the friendships made along the way. All 10 of us from all around the world became so close and share memories that will last a lifetime. Two Americans, a German, an Austrian, an Irishman, three Brits, an Australian, and another Canadian all in one bus for 26 days. You spent day and night with your group and get very close, very fast.

One of my favorite places we visited was definitely The Sea Shack is Gaspesie. We happen to go during their national Quebec Day weekend when we had visited and the French locals were very friendly. Met a ton of travelers/locals on the beach, by the fire, or even in the kitchen (everyone was willing to chat!) It was a gorgeous location, right on the beach with live music almost every night. We even saw a pod of 3 whales right by the beach for sunset on our last night - it was unreal.

I also really enjoyed my time in Quebec City. Beautiful location with gorgeous views. A lot of fun shopping in the city but also pretty views off the edge facing the water. Loved our hostel in this location as well! The hostel had a comfortable room set-up with plenty of shower rooms nearby and other hangout rooms to relax in. Staff was super kind. Also, we had a great time enjoying the nightlife there for a night. Everyone went out as a group and we hopped a couple of bars/clubs. Fun to explore for the day, but also a great time for young going-out scenery.

Another great activity we got to do was canyoning. What an adrenaline rush but quite the experience. Got to jump into waterfalls, and walk down some 100-foot rocks! A little scary in some moments, but a great experience and great value for the excursion.

Another favorite spot was the sand dunes in Tadoussac. Such a beautiful spot! A bunch of us rolled down the hills and relaxed at the bottom of the hill after goofing off. Never seen such amazing views like that, but also a great location to hang out and soak in some rays.

Overall, 10/10 unforgettable experience!
