McConechys Falkirk not interested

Phoned McConechys Falkirk and told to bring car in as I was concerned re possible oil leak. Got car in before 9am and told they would ring when ramp available. Heard nothing so chased at lunch time to be told they’d get to it in the afternoon. Phoned again after 4pm and told they’d get it done in next hour and a half. Went in to garage at 545 to be told they hadn’t looked at it and come back tomorrow. No apology, completely disinterested when mentioned I had been told it would be checked. Will not use again. Don’t know how staff are treated but suspect with their attitude they display it’s pretty rubbish

I had a genuinely terrible experience with Halfords Autocentre McConechy's Leith.

I booked an MOT in December for mid-January, as my MOT was due to expire later that month and I wanted time to plan for any repairs on an older car. That appointment was cancelled just days before, with no proactive attempt to rebook me, the first red flag.

The replacement booking meant my MOT was carried out on the exact day it expired, leaving me no flexibility.

I was initially advised of failures totalling around £200, which I agreed to. However, after approving the work, I was then told the report was “incorrect” and that I actually needed significantly more expensive repairs – including a £255 coil spring replacement that had originally been listed as “monitor”, not a failure. This felt very misleading, especially once I had already committed.

I was then instructed to drive the car without a valid MOT to “clear the exhaust emissions” before a retest. Being told to drive a vehicle without an MOT is completely unacceptable and raised serious concerns about their professionalism.

From there, the situation deteriorated further. After chasing repeatedly, I was told there were delays sourcing a windscreen wiper part, which again had not been clearly identified upfront as a failure. I was then told it could take up to six months and was advised to source the part myself from eBay using a part number provided by the manager. When I did this, I was then told it was the wrong part.

At this point, communication effectively stopped. My car was left in limbo, they couldn’t pass it, couldn’t fix it, and offered no resolution.

After spending over £400 and still not having a usable car, I requested a refund. I was told this would take 3–5 working days. After chasing again, I was informed the manager I had been dealing with was no longer working there, and the new manager was dismissive and unwilling to help.

It then took multiple lengthy calls to the helpline to resolve, as the refund had not even been processed correctly. I finally received the refund on 16th March, nearly two months after the original booking. The car was scrapped shortly after.

This experience was poorly managed from start to finish, with misleading information, unacceptable advice, and no accountability. I would strongly recommend avoiding this garage.

Shame on you

If you’d had the intelligence to put her registration into your system (like I did) you’d have seen what she’d had last time. Needless to say she went elsewhere & will be using this different company going forward. As will I be.

Don’t waste your time and money. Shocking service and attitudes

I had used mcconechys for all 3 of our cars, and I tell you now I would never bother wasting my time and money going back. It was good when Michelle worked there at Kirkcaldy’s, then after she’s left things have gone down the drain over the last year or so. Cars booked and paid, MOTS and services cancelled, MOT was cancelled the night before and was to be in 1st thing in the morning, was then expired so couldn’t get to work. Other car re arranged and then today took the parents car down, dropped it off this morning 1st thing for a service at 0820, 3 hours later I get a phone call to say that a staff member isn’t well and they can’t do my car as they called in sick, a person with their MOT that got grief for being late, and not just a couple of minutes either, should have cancelled it and gone back another time and keep to the schedule. Shocking communication and company, no pun they just take you for a ride. Lastly when your car has been MOT’d they don’t bother to phone you to say your good to pick up, they wait the afternoon. Infuriating puts it politely!

Attended Irvine Halfords McConechys at fitting time only to be told they couldn’t fit tyres and couldnt call me either . No missed calls as they used to a 9 digit number for a mobile , must be the only people in UK who doesn’t know the length of a mobile number .
Blamed the tyre machine of course it wouldn’t be anything to do with it being a 5 pm fitting time .
Pitiful excuses which are an insult to your intelligence.WHY would you go here ?

Atrocious service

My partner booked her car in to get snow tyres fitted at the Elgin branch. Having arranged another vehicle for her work, I turned up with her vehicle at the time specified and then was informed that they didn't have staff available and they only do changeovers on a Saturday. They were told what needed done when she called and told to bring it first thing on Monday (today). Interestingly, they didn't ask for a name and number as I would have expected a call to say if they couldn't manage that day. They seemed to have very little interest in their mistake. I won't use them again

Terrible East Kilbride branch

Used East Kilbride branch in March 2025 for Wheel Alignment.
June 2025, I put my car in for a Pre MOT at another garage to be told the Tracking rod boot was all twisted and damaged which would fail a MOT.

The garage went to repair this only to find out that 3 bolts on the wheel was crossed threaded and snapped non removal. Which meant I also had to get a new Hub Bearing kit fitted to my car.

Absolute cowboys and I will never use them again. Called to tell them to get told, it was so long ago it we couldn't take responsibility. (3 months).

I have logged a complaint with the head office regarding this.

03/07/2025: Reply from head office:
"I am very sorry for the delay and for the issues you have raised in regards to your track rod end. I have spoken with the centre and when the tracking is done, they do not touch this part as they only need access to the nuts to adjust the track rod this sort of damage could not have been done by our centre."

The track rod (tie rod) boot has to be removed to adjust the track rod. So lies from Halfords here. Incompetent staff.

Great team at Dundee Halfords. Reliable and efficient!

My car was damaged in a collision with another vehicle whilst it was parked. Halford/McConechys Dundee got the part in super fast and got me back on the road. What a great bunch of hardworking guys. Smiling, efficient polite and fast!! Top notch service. Thank you! Second time you've come to my rescue when the KF lot couldn't be arsed!! Keep it up.

Excellent audirepaits

I booked in my car having had some worries about a noise. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They not only sorted out the problem on the same day as I need my car for work they were able to add in additional work i had already booked in for the following week. I saved both time and money and feel assure bu the expert advice of the team. Rachel

Booked a coolant change at Halfords…

Booked a coolant change at Halfords Spiersbridge because I thought coolant light was staying on.
Spiersbridge pointed out that I had made a mistake and
had inadvertently pressed the stalk and brought it up on menu. There was nothing wrong with the coolant.
They refunded my on line payment quickly. I was very pleased and grateful because I had taken in to the dealer I bought it from who failed to point out my mistake and told me to fill it up with water which I did but which wasn’t necessary.
I will go back to Halfords because I trust them to give me the correct advice.

Don't use, no idea what they are doing & are rude

I had my car booked in for a Brake fluid change, a relatively easy job. I had to drop it off at 11:30 and was told I needed to leave it all day - I then get a call at 4pm to say they couldn't do it today - some equipment missing - I was offered a rebook but no proper apology and no offer of compensation. When I went down to collect the car the staff were indifferent and border line rude. The key was thrown on the desk. It was clear they were having a bad day and also clear they ran out of time and used missing equipment as an excuse. The surroundings of the place is a mess, cars all over the place, pot holes in the road. A total dump inside and out. The manager couldn't speak to me cause he legally wasn't allowed as he was doing an MOT - maybe that's true but sounds like nonsense.

£4,000+ Damage To Alloys

I ordered two tyres online for my Audi Q8 to have fitted at this branch. The tyres were 22 inch. I turned up for pre-arranged appointment and Andy advised due to the size of the wheels he was going to put his best worker on them. I had booked a Friday appointment, but Andy asked me to come in on a Thursday specifically because of the size of the wheels and that there would be more staff in. My alloy wheels prior to this were immaculate with no damage on them.

Upon fitting the tyres and driving away from the garage I stopped to inspect the tyres /alloys and found damage on two of the alloy wheels. I returned to the garage immediately and spoke with Andy the branch manager to inform him of the damage.

The damage on the alloys is within the lip of the alloy which would be impossible to damage by kerbing the wheels. Andy accepted that it was his fitter that damaged both wheels with the wheel machine that removes and adds the tyres to the alloys.

Andy was initially great to deal with. He advised me I would need to contact customer services to lodge a complaint. He called me back out of hours the same night to advise he spoke with his area director about the issue and that if the repair costs were less or the same as what I had paid for the tyres, they could refund me but if the repair costs were greater than what I paid for tyres then it would need to go through customer services which was understandable.

He advised me to provide them with a quote from an alloy wheel specialist to have the alloys diamond cut (cost of £280). Unfortunately, due to the alloys being original factory the alloy wheel specialist couldn't repair them to their original standard. It was to do with Audi Sport decals / badges lasered into the alloys. I informed Andy of this, and he asked for 2 quotes for new alloys from Audi. Audi provided a quote of over £2,000 per alloy, total £4,000 to replace these.

I raised a complaint on the 24th of October 2024 with customer service. I emailed Andy and the garage on the 25th October with a quote to have the wheels diamond cut but also for full replacement. I was told I would receive a response within 48/72 hours. I did not receive a response and followed up with customer services on the 1st of November for an update and was told it was escalated to a further team and to await response. I called again today 8th November to customer service to ask for an update as I was still waiting to hear back from them since the 24th of October. Again, I'm told someone will get back to me and I wasn't able to speak with the specific team investigating the claim.

I've tried to call the actual garage numerous times, probably over 20 times since but no one answers the calls. I’m approx. 10 miles away so not easy to just drop in.

Overall what should have been a straight forward process fitting two tyres has now resulted in over £4,000 in damage to my alloy wheels and hours of having to speak with a diamond cut alloy specialist, take the car to them, call Audi, get quotes for 2 new alloys, speak with customer service and try to speak with Andy at the garage.

I’m still waiting on a response and I’m concerned now that given the cost of putting me back in the original position with no damage Halfords will not admit liability.

A disappointing experience.

the worst of the worst

I initially phoned Halfords to ask if I could get a battery health check done at their store in Greenock. They said no and I would have to go to Halfords McConechys Greenock Autocentre to get that done and booked me in for 11.30. I turned and presumed it was just a quick check with a multimeter but was told it would be done in an hour and they would phone me. Eventually after not hearing anything I came back 1 and a 1/2 hours later and the car was sitting in the corner of the car park. It then took 20 minutes to find the guy that did it who told me that it was inconclusive and I should probably just get a new battery. The women at the desk then asked me why I hadn’t just taken it to the Halfords store. I explained that Halfords had told me when I phoned that the store couldn’t do it and I’d have to take it to the auto centre. I queried then why I had just spent 2 hours at the auto centre to not even get an answer and I’d take it to the store after all this. They were able to check almost immediately in the store but pointed out that because it was a Citroen Picasso c4 it is practically impossible to test the battery as you have to remove trim and engine parts as it is location means the negative terminal is way back right under the dashboard. The store were ok about it but suggested to me he took it back to Halfords McConechys Greenock Autocentre and get the guy to show me how he actually tested it, because there was no way he could have without removing trim, parts etc. and he obviously hadn’t.
A shocking wasn’t of 3 hours and obvious that Halfords McConechys Greenock Autocentre were just being absolutely cowboys and trying to rip me off. After speaking to our usual mechanic he pointed out If they knew anything about cars they would have told you straight away it was a nightmare to check instead if lying and trying to con you. I would say Halfords McConechys Greenock Autocentre are the worst of the worst. Especially the big silver back guy who claimed he tested it and tried to con me into getting a new battery. And Halfords need to make sure their customer services telephone line knows something about the services Halfords deliver because both the auto centre and the store said they were terrible.

Went to Halfords Mcconechys in…

Went to Halfords Mcconechys in Speitsbridge , Glasgow due my Nissan Qashqais' front offside suspension spring breaking. Unfortunately all local independent garages had a waiting list of two weeks , so needing my car I went to this so called garage. I asked them to do the nearside spring as well , ended up with a bill of nearly £1200 as they stated that I need new link arms, coupling rods and suspension arm mounts. Between a rock and hard place as I needed my car. When I got the car back a top arm mounting bolt was missing and the platic section under my windscreen had no securing clips , they put a mounting bolt on nearly 5 weeks later still awaiting the securing clips. Fobbed off by as it stands now - 4 members of staff , one stated that they had ordered them from Nissan Darnley , I checked - they hadn't. Don't go there , rip off merchants and very poor communication and after care .

I visited the Stranraer branch of Halfords for a full service yesterday, and it was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. I deeply regret not reading other reviews beforehand, especially on Trustpilot.

I handed my car over at 10 AM, and six hours later, they were still “changing the oil.” Over the phone, they assured me the car would be ready in a couple of hours, and then guaranteed by 4 PM. It was 5:30 PM, and still no sign of completion. This level of incompetence is beyond frustrating, and I will NEVER be coming back here.

To make matters worse, they informed me at the end of the job that the tyres they sold me in April 2023—just 16 months ago—were already at the end of their life. My previous set of tyres lasted over 5 years, so you can imagine my shock. When I mentioned I’d need to order new tyres (obviously not from them), they reported me to the POLICE! I was fined shortly after for driving home on worn tyres. The audacity to sell me such poor-quality tyres and then call the police when I chose not to buy from them again is absolutely disgusting.

Not only did they keep my car for 7 and a half hours for a service, but they also failed to fix the rear differrencial oil leak which i precisely asked for and even more importantly they failed to apologize for the inconvenience, instead blaming everything else around them. Minutes later, they had the nerve to act as if it was all completely normal, asking me to continue waiting like nothing was wrong.

Avoid this place like the plague. They are unprofessional, dishonest, and their customer service is non-existent. Save yourself the stress and go elsewhere. Just wondering how Halfords can afford their name to be compromised like that.

Snapped brake line

My warning light came on for low brake fluid when in Tesco Oban. I went to Halfords McConechys in Oban across the road, telling them my warning light had come on and the brake pedal was spongy. The manager came out and took a look, and told me the brake line had snapped. He put the car up in the ramp, in front of other jobs immediately to investigate further, and told me not to drive it. He didn't take any money from me for looking at it. Was very nice of him to drop everything when he realised I had a serious issue. Would definitely use again and highly recommend to anyone.

Awful. Avoid.

Booked Aircon recharge day before after a pre check at Halfords in Elgin.
Booked time off work and got my wife to follow me down for a lift after her 12 hour shift only to be met with a dour and unapologetic individual who didn't even care. Nobody there to run the machine and no communication to warn me. This world is just falling apart. Nobody has any respect for anyone anymore. Obviously...not recommended 😕
