Truly impressive.

Maxer has once again handled an email issue for us quickly and professionally. Time after time over the last number ofyears, they’ve proven themselves to be top notch. I've been trusting Maxer with my clients' websites for many years. While we’ve tried other hosting companies, none have matched the level of support Maxer delivers. Their team consistently goes above and beyond, and have highly skilled and experienced staff on their their support team. They're always courteous and genuinely dedicated. By far the best hosting company we've worked with. Their hosting service is rock-solid — we never encounter downtime or interruptions. Truly impressive.

A little slow server for a high price

I was their customer for many years. I used to use SpeedySparrow at first, but they sold their web hosting service to Maxer years ago. I guess they failed because they had a problem with invoicing, sending old invoices to their customers. The owner was not a bad man, though. For a while Maxer has maintained the price from SpeedySparrow, which was a little high in the first place. Then Maxer raised their prices. That was when cPanel tried to raise their cPanel prices.

The price was already a little too high, but then they raised their already high price. But my websites there was not receiving high traffic. My two websites there got only a few real human visitors a day, not counting bots. That was my limit, no, beyond my allowable limit.

If their server were fast, it might have compensated for the price, but their server was a little slow, even compared to cheaper web hosting services. I did not need a particularly fast server in the first place. Paying several dollars a month means nearly a dollar for each real human visitor. So that was too much.

Support was fairly good, I must say. However, it was an economic nonsense to use their slow but steady expensive server for low traffic websites.

If they lowered prices by half or minus two thirds, I might even return. I am sure that would not happen.

We acquired SpeedySparrow in 2012 as part of our growth strategy across Australia and Asia. I understand you stayed with us through the rebrand and for many years after, until May 2024.

Looking back, we’ve retained many of the original customers, expanded our presence, and we’re proud of how the service has developed.

As a hosting provider, we face regular cost increases from suppliers, including hardware, energy, and licensing. As you mentioned, cPanel changed its pricing model in 2019 from a flat per-server fee to a per-account structure. Those fees have increased each year, but we have only passed on one of those increases to clients.

We remain committed to providing a reliable service with core benefits like the industry-leading control panel, 24/7 technical support, and added features such as R1Soft nightly backups, AutoSSL for all websites, and WP Toolkit, all included at no extra cost.

In your case, the annual renewal stayed the same for 11 years until we introduced a modest increase of around $10 per year. On average, this represented an 8% increase for clients who had a price adjustment in 2015, and 12% for clients whose pricing had not changed since 2011 or earlier. We believe that’s a fair adjustment given the current economic climate and ongoing supplier price hikes.

Site scraperbot attack - leaving me largely on my own

I've been a loyal Maxer (nee Spiral customer) for eight years. But my recent experience has now led me to consider other hosting companies:

Early this month, for the first time ever, I received automated cPanel warnings that my site was almost at its full month bandwidth limit. At which point, it was implied, my site might be automatically cut off for the remaining three weeks of the month.

In response I submitted a top priority support request to Maxer under the title “Is my website under attack?”

In (pretty short order) I received the response that my traffic logs showed traffic from AI scraperbots, especially one in particular. And suggested that I might want to add several lines of code to my Apache .htaccess file on Maxer’s server in order to limit this bot.

Drawing upon 30 years experience as a webmaster (including 10 years installing and configuring web-severs) I WAS able to safely install that code, which cut off that bot within the hour.

But with that reprieve, and again drawing on the above experience, I began to analyze my server logs. Where I found, over the course of the entire preceding week, that that bot had accounted for one quarter of a million successful hits on my site.

But that huge surge of traffic, from a single easily identified and well known bot, had produced no automatic warnings from either cPanel or Maxer.

Further, digging into cPanel, I found that there was no way of configuring cPanel to send a warning of exceptional ONGOING traffic. Instead it offers only warnings when the ACCUMULATED monthly bandwidth reaches a contracted limit - presumably then prompting an automatic shutdown (or severe throttling?) for the balance of that month.

But further, in researching that particular AI bot, the very first websites I was directed to focused on how this bot’s identity could easily disguised (via only a few lines of added code) to let it pass as a well known search engine bot. Meaning that, while the suggested Apache access code HAD stopped that bot’s traffic within the hour, it masters could now easily disguise their bot and renew their attacks at any moment.

So I sent another note to Maxer pointing out that because I had in no way left my site open to such a attack, I assumed that even if my site did now exceed its bandwidth limit it would NOT be shut down. To which I received the response:

"I’ve increased the bandwidth limit for this month from 200 GB to 300 GB. Please monitor your bandwidth usage over the coming days and ensure it returns to normal levels. Keep in mind that the bandwidth statistics in cPanel can be up to 24 hours out of date. If any specific user-agents are causing excessive traffic, I recommend blocking them. While I’ve been able to increase the limit on this occasion, please note that future increases may not always be possible, and a fee may apply if the issue continues.”

In other words, now avoiding a shutdown or fee would be entirely upon my shoulders.

cPanel and Maxer software SHOULD have spotted unprecedented, massive, single user traffic my website NOT after a full week (when it was near being shut down), but 5-6 days before that. At which point corrective measures could have been implemented LONG before the site approached its final (shut down?) bandwidth limit.

Further, the solution to blocking this well known AI scraperbot should have been implemented rapidly by, if not cPanel, at least by Maxer. Rather than leaving it to a single user who was able to implement an ad-hoc solution ONLY on the basis of unusually long and deep experience with web servers.

With the net result that, having now done everything I could do (without excluding legitimate search engines and users), I am still wide open to renewed attack by that bot after a simple disguising name change.

And I am on my own.

You correctly pointed out in your original message that bots can spoof their user-agent strings and that these headers should only be treated as a guide - not definitive proof of the source. It's wise to approach it with care and ensure that normal visitors to your website are not impacted by bot traffic.

The main bot discussed in the support ticket belongs to an open source AI project that's very popular and respected within the scientific community. While in this case its behaviour has caused a nuisance on your website, it is frequently used to provide useful data to scientific projects, and it is not a security risk. The AI software serves a legitimate purpose, many of our clients would not want it to be blocked, and we must consider that when implementing security policies across our shared hosting network.

Our hosting plans include a monthly bandwidth limit, but in this instance, we granted additional bandwidth as a goodwill gesture while the issue was being resolved. We also flagged the need to monitor it further, not as a threat, but because we wanted to prevent a recurrence that could impact your site's availability. Perhaps we could've communicated that more clearly, but the replies were brief because the ticket was marked high priority and our immediate focus was finding a working solution for you - especially given in the language of an "attack" in the support ticket.

We were glad to see that the quick response from our support ticket and the code we provided had an immediate positive effect in resolving the problem for you. Respectfully, we believe the 1-star is unwarranted.

Very professional support
