Things start off good...
The Carrot experience starts off very strong. Their advisors are friendly, knowledgeable, and supportive, and the introductory consultations leave you feeling confident that you’ll have meaningful guidance throughout the fertility journey.
Unfortunately, my experience changed significantly once it came time to actually use the benefits.
The biggest challenge was that many IVF-related medication expenses were not covered. Despite having fertility benefits through Carrot, I was left with thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket medication costs. The claims and reimbursement process was also extremely slow, taking weeks for claims to be reviewed and an additional 6–7 weeks to receive reimbursement.
My biggest concern, however, was privacy. I was surprised to learn that my employer was notified that I was utilizing fertility benefits through Carrot. While specific medical details may not be shared, simply knowing that an employee is using fertility benefits can strongly suggest that they are trying to conceive. For individuals who have intentionally chosen not to disclose fertility treatments at work, this can feel like a significant invasion of privacy and create concerns about potential bias related to promotions, career advancement, or future project opportunities.
Fertility treatment is already an emotionally, physically, and financially stressful process. Unfortunately, instead of reducing that stress, my experience with Carrot added uncertainty, delays, and frustration at a time when support mattered most.
While the coaching and advisor experience was positive, I would not recommend Carrot based on the limitations of coverage, reimbursement delays, and concerns around employee privacy.
