I was asked to pay a legal fee contribution for advice provided by this firm, and my experience of the invoicing process was disappointing.

The fee arrangement was not made clear to me as the paying party. I understood that I had agreed to contribute up to a maximum amount, but I was not provided with the quote, terms, or a clear explanation of the charges in advance.

The first invoice I received included professional fees plus an additional service charge, taking the total above the amount I understood had been agreed. After I queried it, a revised invoice was issued with the professional fees reduced and a different admin/verification charge included within the total.

The final amount may have been adjusted, but the process felt unclear and frustrating. As the party being asked to pay, I would have expected more transparency around the fee structure, additional charges, and the basis of the invoice from the outset.

Overall, I found the experience disappointing and not as clear or transparent as I would expect from a professional services firm.

I instructed EMW Law in April 2024 on a garage lease extension — a process that wasn't completed until January 2026, nearly two years later. I want to be fair: the matter did involve some genuine complexity around title history and the need for a new lease. That said, the overall experience fell well short of what I'd expect from a professional firm.

The main issues were:

• Communication was consistently reactive rather than proactive. I regularly had to chase for updates, and my messages sometimes went unanswered. At one point, EMW themselves acknowledged that my case hadn't been given adequate attention — which I appreciated in terms of honesty, but it shouldn't have reached that point.

• I raised formal complaints on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, they didn't result in any noticeable improvement in how the matter was handled.

• After registration completed, I requested a certified copy of the document. Both the first and second copies provided had defects that made them legally ineffective. I eventually stopped asking.

I don't doubt that individual lawyers at the firm are capable, and some matters may be handled well. But based on my experience, I'd encourage anyone considering EMW for conveyancing or lease work to think carefully and, if you do proceed, to push firmly for a named point of contact and regular written updates from the outset.

Working with EMW helped me through my first experience of taking a property to auction and I have to say it was extremely positive.
Having failed to sell conventionally this turned out to be far easier and quicker.
