Our wedding day, which should have been one of the happiest days of our lives, was left overshadowed by fear, distress, and disappointment.

The most shocking moment was when the disco ball fell from the ceiling and landed dangerously close to a three-year-old child. It happened moments before they were about to go and eat. We had to react instantly and grab them to prevent what could have been a horrific accident.

What made the situation worse was the response afterwards. Staff appeared aware that something had gone wrong, but we were told the disco ball had been secured correctly. From what we could see, it had been held up with four corners using extremely thin, almost invisible lines that guests could not see. This created not only a risk of the fixture falling, but also a potential trip hazard for guests.

The impact this had on everyone was huge. Guests, including families with children aged between 3 and 9, were left shaken and uncomfortable. Some people chose to leave shortly after because they no longer felt at ease. The mood of the entire day changed from celebration to worry.

As the bride and groom, we were left trying to process a frightening situation on what should have been a once-in-a-lifetime memory. We both have ADHD and autism, and one of us also has EUPD, which made the emotional impact of the day’s events even more overwhelming.

The service overall also fell far below expectations. With fewer than 40 guests attending, the catering and organisation felt completely unsuitable, as though the event had been prepared for a much larger group rather than the intimate wedding we had planned.

We trusted this venue with one of the most important days of our lives. Instead, we were left with distressing memories, upset guests, and a feeling that our safety and experience were not given the care and attention they deserved.

We hope this review encourages the venue to seriously look at their safety procedures, communication, and event standards so that another couple and their families do not experience the same disappointment.

Exceptional Service and a Flawless Wedding Experience
Having recently moved to the area, we were initially unfamiliar with the Empress Building, but selecting it as our wedding venue was an excellent decision.
From our first consultation, the wedding planner demonstrated exceptional expertise. We provided minimal input, yet she perfectly translated our vision into reality, meticulously matching our colour scheme and overall theme. The team was also wonderfully accommodating, allowing us to incorporate personal touches into the event, such as providing specific wine for our guests.
The catering was outstanding, featuring a wide selection of high-quality meats and canapés that kept our guests thoroughly delighted. The venue presentation was equally impressive, with the guest tables and top table beautifully arranged and styled.
The entire pre-planning process was seamless. Communication was open and collaborative, making it easy to discuss and refine ideas. As the event approached, the staff ensured every final detail was absolutely perfect. On the day of the wedding, they kindly accommodated a venue pre-inspection by our Best Man and Best Lady, who were thrilled with the final set-up.
For anyone seeking a low-stress planning experience that expertly delivers on the day and night of the event, I highly recommend the Empress Building.

The empress is a wonderful building . The shows there are always amazing and so well organised . The staff are all fantastic too . They have added bedrooms now and these are so gorgeous and so reasonably priced . The venue is fab for a wedding and stay . I wish them well with all future events . I will be there again soon . The last time I went it was Mickey Callisto and it was lovely to meet him

Absolutely brilliant night out.weve been twice first to see "The Rozzers" an amazing Police tribute band the to see Dame Ida the funniest & best drag show I've ever seen.we will be back again a warm friendly place with great pie & peas

Had a great evening here watching John Archer and Roy Walker. It's a proper, traditional, events space of which there are too few. Brilliant friendly staff, well organised event, good food and great prices. Will definitely be back and will stay in their rooms next time.

Been to Empress buildings on numerous occasions, excellent venue,and Jemma and Staff are absolutely amazing. The Great Pretenders were amazing as well, really looking forward to my next visit.

This is a great venue. It has a stage a large dance floor and the surroundings are lovely. There are 2 car parks nearby as well. The acts are often very gud and the tickets are very affordable. Once u hv purchased tickets u will recieve money offers for future gigs and sometimes can enter a competition to win free tickets. This place has become a regular haunt if mine. My only criticism is it can be a bit cold in winter maybe something can be done about this ????

This is my 2nd time at the Empress and wow what can I say except if you want a really good night out then get yourself here. The acts they have are amazing and yesterday evening’s act “The Great Pretenders” were absolutely fantastic. A really great tribute act to Freddie Mercury and Brian May. Also the food is really good value. Keep up all the good work at the Empress. You deserve to keep going.
