Good, reliable family business

Honestly, we are a bit flummoxed by the negative reviews. We've lived in Southampton for 20+ years and countless friends and colleagues use them, often following their parents who did the same. They've looked after us for years (car maintenance and purchase) and they are reliable, fair and trustworthy. No hesitations at all in recommending them.

PAID 104 POUNDS FOR NOTHING

I paid £104 for an “investigation” into my engine management light. After running a diagnostic scan, the garage told me they don’t actually have the equipment to locate the suspected air leak (for example a smoke test).

They cleared the engine light, but it came back within about an hour of leaving, so the underlying issue was never resolved.

I had already explained the problem beforehand, so if the garage doesn’t have the tools to properly diagnose air leaks, that should be made clear before charging customers for an investigation.

Instead, after paying £104, I was simply told to go to another garage for further diagnosis. That meant I lost money, wasted my entire morning, and still have the exact same problem.

For a garage, not having the equipment to properly diagnose something as common as an air leak on a BMW was very disappointing.

This is not quite right Mr Ahmad, and our technicians time and experience is certainly not 'paying £104 for nothing'.

You booked your car in to diagnose an EML light not an air leak.

During our investigation we found a variety of intermittent fault codes present on your car and the codes that caught our attention were in relation to a suspected air leak.

We only discovered a suspected air leak after carrying out the investigation. This is what we charged for in this instance.

As we explained, the air leak could be from a multitude of places on a 188,000 mile car including the EGR, Turbo, intercooler and hoses.

We explained this in person and you were provided with a copy of the report which you photographed to reference at a later date.

To be clear - We do have the equipment to diagnose air leaks in most instances. In your case a however, a different test (likely a smoke test) was recommended as this is the most cost effective way to find the leak, rectify the issue and get you back on the road.

For your convenience, when you asked, we recommended you to another local garage that we trust and thought would have the equipment as well as to the BMW specialist across the road.

We are disappointed that you feel you haven't had a good experience on this occasion but don't feel that a one star review is warranted for doing what you asked us to do.

I recently had an MOT and major service…

I recently had an MOT and major service done here, but was disappointed with the unexpected cost increases and lack of transparency compared to initial quote.

Previous pricing (for context): I paid £342.73 for MOT/Major service in 2024.
Initial quote: £380–£400 via text on 22 August 2025 (MOT/Major service/Spark plugs).
Billed amount: £499.83 on 3 October 2025— a big jump with no prior warning.
After querying: Reduced to £447.75 once I mentioned the August quote; staff explained prices had risen since then.
--- 32% increase in 42 days ---
Competitive quote: Just 2 hours later on the same day, I received an online quote for £272.52 via BookMyGarage for MOT/Major sercice from the same business.

I was told an invoice would follow by email, but as of 14/10/2025 I still haven't received it. The pricing inconsistencies and admin oversight left a sour note. Would appreciate the invoice ASAP.

I request that my name not be mentioned in any public response.

I forgot to mention—when I was there in 2024 via BookMyGarage, while paying £342.73 for the 2024 MOT + major service, the “manager” told me that next time I could book directly for—a lower price—.
In 2025, after booking directly, I was quoted £380, which was an increase; but, to be fair, the price included spark plugs. However, when paying, 42 days after the quote, the price was increased further to £499.83. This is not “lower price” from £342.73 that I paid in 2024.

"figure on £499.83 was a mis-calculation from a new member of staff" was in their response to my review. — However, the "new employee" spoke to the "manager" when I complained about the price on the spot — and the manager did not say it was "mis-calculation", but instead he said, paraphrasing, "prices went up since August (meaning from £380 to £499.83 in 42 days), but as goodwill we will lower it to £447.75".

13 days later I still got no invoice, even when they have my contact details in their system and apparently know which customer I am.

For my taste, this is too many "mis-calculations".

I also made a review on Google, but it did not appear there for some reason.

We are sorry to read that you are not happy with the service you received. We do not want to upset our customers and that is never our intention. We have been in business for over 75 years and always put our customers first.

Firstly, we apologise for the confusion on the initial cost of the service. The figure on £499.83 was a mis-calculation from a new member of staff. Upon realising this we were happy to rectify the price to £447.75 for both the E&J Jarvis Major Service & MOT test.

You mentioned finding us cheaper on Book My Garage which isn't actually correct as the services are not like-for-like. Our own service is more comprehensive and covers things that a Book My Garage Major Service wont.

A Book My Garage Major service is defined by their specification sheets which we follow and is closer to what we would consider a Minor Service by our standards.

An E&J Jarvis Major Service includes an oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, higher quality oil , spark plugs (if required), comprehensive checks and a wash & hoover.

Excluding the cost of the MOT tests you paid £322.73 for a Book My Garage Major Service in 2024 and £407.76 for an E&J Jarvis Major Service in 2025.

That reflects a price difference of £85.03. For that extra money you have not only received a better quality of service but also 4 spark plugs (parts and labour to fit), a higher quality of oil and a wash & hoover which we believe is fantastic value for money.

We feel it is important to mention that the estimate given in August was a rough price that is in part dictated to us by parts costs and availability. We are able to offer a more accurate estimate when you book in closer to the date an estimate is given.

We would like an opportunity to discuss this with you in person and offer a discount on future work - the last thing we want is a good customer feeling sour over a misunderstanding.

We have tried to explain as best we can that prices can change and that the original price given was an estimate for work carried out over a month later. We have apologised for the miscalculation and tried to rectify the situation as best we can.

No Service but money charged

I specifically mentioned a TPMS issue with my car, and they assured me it had been reset (just a button) and was fine. However, apart from a water wash, it didn’t feel like they had done much, despite charging £399 for a major service on my Ford Fiesta—a significant amount.

I expected them to address all the issues, but the very next day, I faced the same problems I had reported. Overall, I’m disappointed with their work ethic and the quality of service provided.

I initially thought the service was done properly, but after using the vehicle for a day, I realised the issue was not resolved. When I requested a recheck, I was told it would be charged even though the same issue had supposedly been addressed during the original service. Does this mean I have to pay twice for the same problem? Just to clarify, I’m not asking for anything free—I’ve already been billed for every task that was carried out.

For anyone reading this review here is our response:

We are disappointed to read this review after our initial positive interaction for the service on your Ford Fiesta which you were happy with. We would like to point out that as well as the major service we also carried out an investigation into a noise from your car which we diagnosed and repaired at no extra charge (this would normally incur a fee).

With regards to your TPMS light coming on we explained to you that these are temperamental and that you would likely need replacement parts. We initially reset the tyre pressures and TPMS which is standard practice in an attempt to save you from needing to spend out on new parts however unfortunately that hasn't worked on this occasion.

To be clear, a TPMS light issue isn't usually something we repair during a standard service and you will see on your invoice that once again we didn't charge for this work.

To clarify once again - we absolutely completed the work which you paid for and even carried out extra work FREE OF CHARGE.

In response to the further comments:

Correct. We addressed the issue and carried out a TPMS reset which is the most common fix. This is extra work that is not included in the Major service. We did not charge for this and have the paperwork to prove that fact.

No. You haven't paid for the TPMS light to be fixed in the first place as we didn't charge. We did this in an attempt to save you money.

As this has not fixed the issue it would appear that one of the sensors have likely failed and would require replacing. We will of course have to charge for this.

Your assertion that you have had no service but been charged money is simply incorrect and defamatory to our reputation as a reliable family business for over 75 years.
