Mr Vijay Hegde has over 20 years of experience in Ophthalmology. He was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist in 2010 and works at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary & BMI Albyn Hospital. He has undergone extensive training in cataract and retinal surgery and has undertaken surgical fellowships in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and Aberdeen. Mr Hegde specialises in performing complex cataract surgery including topical or no needle cataract surgery. His routine cataract surgery involves micro incision with full choice of intraocular lenses to reduce spectacle dependency. He is one of the early adopters of latest ophthalmic technologies, using sutureless, local anaesthetic vitrectomy for an early post-operative recovery. Mr Hegde is actively involved in clinical research. He has numerous publications and presentations under his name. He is recognised as a surgical trainer both for cataract and vitreoretinal surgery by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is currently in charge of medical students teaching for ophthalmology; he also enjoys training nurses and optometrists. He is an examiner for FRCSEd examination at Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is currently the Regional Educational Advisor for Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is married and lives with 2 children and a dog. In his down time he likes to spend time with his family, playing cricket and golf. He volunteers an an official at Gordonians Cricket Club and enjoys working and training juniors.

Mr Hedge was timely at every appointment and confirmed my visual shortcomings caused by cataracts in both eyes.
He explained that both were suitable for regular surgery and suggested a treatment plan. When I attended the appointments for surgery he visited me and was reassuring. He then met me in the theatre and explained everything he was doing and what I could expect.
I felt in safe hands throughout procedures.
I am now one month on from the completion of surgery and my sight is amazing, I have crystal clear distant vision and use only weak of the shelf gasses to read small print. Driving at night on narrow Highland Roads still causes me a little concern when faced with ultra bright LED headlamps but otherwise I feel much more comfortable and confident.

Mr Hegde is very approachable, clearly explaining the procedures and the options available. Thereby putting one at ease, confident that the outcome will be successful. That confidence was then justified by the success of the surgery. For me the whole procedure and recovery were totally free from pain or even discomfort, less onerous than some experiences I have had with a dentist. Most importantly the surgery has enabled me to easily drive without glasses for the first time in over thirty years and to overcome the halo effect that more recently prevented me driving after sunset.

His manner was attentive but calm putting me at ease and I felt totally comfortable during my procedure. Mr Hegde is a consummate professional and extremely good at putting you at ease, and giving you all the information you need. I have had to have cataracts removed from both eyes in my 40's, and considering that I have only one good eye, it has been quite daunting. Mr Hegde has performed two excellent surgeries, both of which have been a complete success. He is also very personabIe and easy to talk to - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him should you need advice or indeed, surgery.

My surgery went perfectly and I would recommend Mr Hegde without any hesitation. My distant sight is great and my need for reading glasses is slight.

He examined me step wise prior to cataract surgery and explained the proceedings clarifying my doubts. During the procedure he went on explaining the progress followed by post procedure care.
He contacted me on phone when I wanted an advice after the surgery.
He engages with the patient very well during the procedure which helps in feeling safe and relaxed.

I had cataracts in both eyes removed and replaced with multi focal lenses. I am 74 and my sight was impacting my ability to drive. The procedure was pain free both during and after the procedure. Both my distance and near sight has been restored and I do not require glasses. After initial apprehension I soon felt I was in safe hands.
