Started good, ended bad.
This interaction started out great, and then went bad. I emailed back and forth with Jason - January 8 he provided a quote. Getting this sign shipped was 1/3 the price of the local sign makers, and the company was still an American supplier (or so I thought). I paid for the sign later that day. On the 27th he sent photos of the sign, and a tracking number on the 30th. I felt like the sign looked great, production was fast, and shipping was very reasonable.
What I noticed here was my first red flag - the tracking number was coming straight from China. I don't have any problem with that, aside from the fact that this company presented as a manufacturer when they are just a reseller...
When I got the sign I was a little surprised that it was all separate pieces, not channel mounted but this was my fault for not exploring that completely. The sign looked great, I called a local installer and had them come check it out for best way to install on my building.
That company showed me how the "components" were certified but the sign itself wasn't - this can't be installed on my building in its current form. The initial communication said "The unit includes UL Certified components". I figured this would be easy enough to resolve, so I looked into some options for getting it field certified and came up empty handed.
On march 10 I emailed Jason and explained what I was up against. He responded promptly, and kindly with this:
"Hi Jacob, Yes, the sign is UL listed.
The finished sign assembly is manufactured using UL-certified components, including the LED modules and power supply, and the UL label will be applied to the sign as required for permitting and installation. This ensures the sign meets the electrical safety standards needed for commercial signage.
For permitting purposes, I can also provide the UL certification details and documentation if your installer or city permitting office requires it.
Please let me know if you’d like me to share those documents, and I’ll be happy to send them over."
So I confirmed I did in fact need those documents.
March 27 I checked back in to see what the status was. No response.
April 16 I emailed again and he responded and thanked me for the wait.
Today, May 7th I brought the whole sign to a sign maker in town so that they can take it apart, rebuild the whole thing and get it certified - the bad thing is this process will cost me more than the sign did in the first place. I've sent another email to Jason asking if he can at least provide the sign company with info on the LEDs, if he can't even do that it drives my cost up even further.
Buyer beware: Check if you can legally install this sign before ordering. If you don't have code to meet, you'll probably have a good time.
