I was fortunate enough to meet Justin Paperny in 2010 not long after he started putting his life back together after his release from prison. I was immediately impressed with how he spent his time while incarcerated. He took responsibility for his actions and started working on helping others.

As a college professor teaching graduate classes in fraud, I realized very quickly that Justin would be an excellent person to speak to my students. After watching my loved one nearly sink into the abyss of despair and depression in anticipation of his upcoming sentencing hearing, I witnessed White Collar Crime change the course of events of his legal struggle into a victory for our family--in one week.  
A plea bargain had been reached and incarceration recommended by the government.   Sentencing was one week away.  Over the months and years that led to this day, my ex-husband had been sharing with me the videos from White Collar Crime.  I had had the opportunity to watch these and to reflect on Justin's dignity, humility, and his organization's admirable mission to help others.  I had not quite connected the dots that his personalized help was available beyond these videos.    At the eleventh hour before sentencing, I reached out to Justin by email to give thanks for the meaningful material he has put into the public domain.  
I never could have predicted what happened next.  Justin's immediate reply was gracious and to the point: was my loved one ready for the sentencing hearing?  Had he submitted a personal statement and was he ready to speak to the Judge?  I lacked confidence about those matters.  In fact, my ex's attorney had not addressed what he could personally do to improve his outcome.  After a short email exchange in which he expressed his ability to fill in the gaps in the legal defense, we were on the phone with Justin.  I realized with clarity that help was available and had been delivered to my doorstep.
That very same day, just 5 business days before the sentencing hearing, Justin Paperny and Brad Rouse were interviewing my ex, helping him compile a personal history that would inform the Judge about who he was.  Brad carried the ball over the weekend, and into the long days that followed.  The two worked as a perfect tag team along with my ex.  This work did more than provide input to the judge absolutely critical to the best outcome, it also enabled my ex to evaluate his own life as one of dignity and accomplishment, in spite of mistakes.   It also provided materials to his attorney that were used to advocate for him at the sentencing hearing.  Finally, it raised him up enough to work hard with effectiveness in his own defense.   The interviews with Brad gave a structure and a work goal to the defendant who was too overwhelmed to do these things by himself. 
Working together over those 5 days, Brad and Justin turned the course of events.  They interviewed my ex at length, produced the first draft of the personal statement, tailored his oral remarks to the court, and produced an important character reference letter when a friend agreed to be interviewed, all with lightning speed.   More than that, the telephone discussions and opportunity to reflect provided a lifeline of reasonable hope at a time that the weight was almost crushing.  White Collar Crime provided a way to do the hard work that no family member could help with. The expertise they brought was right on point and their recommendations are sound.  The happy outcome was a sentence of at-home supervision as opposed to incarceration.  
I have no doubt that White Collar Crime turned a losing game into a win.  They took the ball to the one-yard line and boosted my loved one with the confidence to carry it across the goal line in his oral statement to the Judge. I am so glad for the fortuitous set of events that caused them to be on our team. I wish we had not acted so late.  I encourage any spouse or family member to get involved early, before the plea bargain, watch White Collar Crime's videos, and realize how their personalized help can be life-changing for your family.   Having said that, our experience shows it is never too late (including after sentencing) to seek their expertise.  I am eternally grateful to Brad and Justin.

My family hired Justin Paperny and talked/worked with Michael Santos to help understand and move through a federal investigation that impacted our entire family.
