I went to Comicon Scotland (Edinburgh)
I went to Comicon Scotland (Edinburgh) and it was the worst experience. As soon as we parked it started going downhill. As someone travelling with a Blue Badge holder, the parking and accessibility was terrible. Blue Badge car park was outrageously far away with a tiny gap used as the entrance which wasn't big enough for a wheelchair. The route from car park to venue included going over large grass areas, bumps, inclines and gravel - not sufficiently accessible for wheelchairs. The check-point system was useless - no checks for safety made (the person I was with had a costume wand in a leather sheath which looked like a knife handle - security asked what it was and didn't even check if there was an actual blade, which although there wasn't, easily could have been). The organisers had totally over sold tickets - 1000's of people so all ques moved at snail pace. The massive crowds meant we were squashed tight against each other. This was a terrible environment for people with sensory issues so we tried to exit but because of the crowds finding exit points was impossible, and the flow of the crowd pushed us deeper into the venue. I couldn't see anything - no costumes, no stalls, no signage. The sound systems were all competing, so the people I was with had to shout to be heard (my group couldn't hear me shouting). One of the main reasons for coming to Comicon was to admire the artists, costumes, trader stalls but due to the over sale of tickets 100's of people were gathering around each stall and it was impossible to see what they were offering - I tried to reach for a plushie but the crowd swept me away from the stall. When we found an exit we tried to use it, explaining to security that we needed to get out for health reasons they declined and wouldn't let us out because they said the crowd would all follow (what?!) All food & drink stalls were over priced (£7 for a small cookie anyone?!) and all outdoors, so in the pouring rain. Another reason why this was a bad event was the tickets were so over-sold that the CosPlay Parade was cancelled due to the number of people in the venue meaning there wasn't enough space for it to happen. We witnessed hundreds of people leaving as we arrived as assumed they must have arrived early with dual-pass/diamond-pass but it turns out they were all as disgusted as us and leaving because it was so bad - nobody wanted a return stamp, and the person counter read 9.2 thousand people as were exiting, with a huge que of people still to enter! I do not recommend ComiCon Scotland. I'm sure other events elsewhere were great but this had no thought for anything other than making money. (Written by a young person from our group - their voice matters as they prepared a costume for weeks for this event and the disappointment was heartbreaking).
