⭐ 1/5 – AVOID – Fraudulent charges and aggressive practices
We rented a car from Malta Island Car Rentals (Agreement No. 152909, 28/05/2026) and experienced multiple fraudulent practices:
1. Undisclosed charges at signing
At the moment of contract signing and key handover, we were charged a “Location Fee” of €29.50 (described verbally by the agent as a “port/harbour tax” that does NOT exist in the written contract) and a fuel charge of €48.50 with absolutely no option to refuel the car ourselves. These charges were imposed with no alternative and no transparency.
2. Damage claim at return – €150
Upon return, they charged us €150 for minor scratches on the lower front bumper — completely invisible at ground level during the initial inspection. When we refused, they threatened to retain the entire €350 deposit. We paid under duress.
3. No response to formal complaint
We sent a formal written complaint No reply whatsoever.
Total overcharged: approx. €228
This company exploits tourists. We are filing complaints with the Malta Tourism Police and all relevant consumer protection authorities. Do not rent from them.

Decent economy option, does what it says.
wasnt looking to spend a fortune, just needed something cheap to get around for a week. found carrentalsmalta.mt and got a Peugeot 108 economy car, tiny little thing but honestly perfect for maltese roads (trust me you dont want anything bigger in some of those villages 😅). collected it near St Julians. only giving 4 stars bc the return process took a bit longer than expected but nothing major. good value overall.

Fair point on the return process taking longer, we hear you and we'll flag that as feedback. Glad it didn't ruin the experience though and that the economy car rental in Malta worked out for the price. Come back soon, maybe upgrade to a slightly bigger one next time
Perfect for exploring Gozo properly.
we spent 4 nights in Gozo and rented a car there rather than relying on taxis. went through carrentalsmalta.mt and got a small economy car for the 4 days, very affordable. Gozo is tiny but trust me you need a car to reach places like Dwejra, Ramla Bay and the inland villages. car was waiting for us when we got off the ferry at Mgarr harbour. no issues at all, returned it on the last day no problem. lovely little island, lovely easy car hire experience. will deffo be back to Malta and Gozo next year 🙌

Brilliant! Just what I needed.
I don’t own a car so finding a rental is usually what I end up doing. Car Rentals Malta hooked me up with a small city car for a few days in no time. Couldn’t believe how easy, cheap and simple the whole process was. Not to mention convenient. Most of us don’t have time to mess around and Car Rentals Malta delivered! Highly recommend using them.
