MMI+ a great aftermarket solution

What made my experience great was being able to order online with ease and the great customer service as everybody else who reviewed. The MMI works great and the install was straight forward. There was only two things that I would point out with the install which is cutting the tape for more slack in the existing wire bundles in the dash and arranging all of the cables and box inside the dash for head unit fitment. Place the box in the very bottom of the cavity underneath all the cables and the head unit will slide right in. Very happy overall and brought my 2015 X5 up to 2026!

Fantastic partner through the years!

Fantastic manufacturer. I've been doing installs for roughly two years and they have been my main bloodline. Very few complaints from my customers or repeat visits. I'll be fully transparent and will say that I had a few customers report faulty devices after around two years but to my surprise they allowed me to send em on back and replaced them. This is only my second gig job of sorts so that is a HUGE deal. I've had to buy two or three of these things from other manufacturers from hima in the past for a customer and it was financially rough ill tell ya that. As long as these guys continue the quality and dealer pricing I will absolutely stay a loyal partner!

Just a generic Sunplus 8368 board..

I'm an electronics engineer specialising in automotive systems and was asked to examine a Linux-based 'BimmerDirect' headunit supplied to a customer for installation into a BMW (NBT architecture).
I first took a look at the supplier's website which, quite frankly, is full of nonsense and misleading statements about having their own factories and criticism of other suppliers etc etc. Its a bit bizarre to say the least.
The 'BimmerDirect' unit turned out to be just a generic board based on the SPHE8386 an ARM-Cortex based System-on-chip (SoC), designed for automotive applications, from Sunplus Technology of Taiwan. It runs a version of Linux 4.9 This is essentially the same 'white label' product that appears under a huge variety of reseller names such as Road Top, Autoabc, PEMP etc. and available on AliExpress, Ebay and through numerous other sales channels. I believe the source manufacturer of these boards is Shenzhen Route Electronics in Mainland China.

There is essentially nothing wrong with these units when installed correctly, but don't overpay and don't get taken in by all the sales guff and the five star reviews (mostly from reviewers who only made one review.....).

You have made many mistakes/inaccuracies, showing you are not qualified in Computer Science.

#1 - To begin, Electronics Engineers do not often work as Radio installers. They formally work as engineers in labs creating electrical systems. if you are working in an automotive shop conducting radio installations, you are not an EE. If you have a Computer Science / Computer Coding credential, you can submit it to us and we will correct this. Otherwise, that statement is not logical.

It is likely that you may have become upset at the fact we inform customers to simply purchase equipment on their own from their selected source rather than instead of from automotive shops. Especially in the UK where we recieve hundreds of messages a month from UK shops performing questionable actions. You are in the UK.

If you are conducting installations on vehicles, which it is verified that you are, this is the expected negative jerk reaction.

#2: If you were a real Electrical Engineer in Computer Systems, you would know that Taiwan produces the best chips in the entire world. We are a Taiwanese HQ company and logically use Taiwan chips.

SUNPLUS are ARM-based automotive / appliance chips which are common in many automotive electronics and industrical equipment. This is because they are reliable and can not be reverse-engineered or hacked compared to other ARM chips.

Don't you think this is common sense and important when we are already competing with various Chinese/Taiwanese manufacturers who produce similar product?

If you were a EE, you would have already known this.

It is clearly stated that LINUX devices are ARM based SoC + APIX on the product website, alongside the RAM. Nothing is confusing or misleading about this.

#3: RoadTop and AUTOABC are both SHENZHEN-based operations. They manufacture their own equipment/firmware/etc. PEMP is EU reseller.

Neither RoadTop or AUTOABC use the same firmware or PCB board.

They both have their own firmware, UI and hardware they use. None are interchangeable.

"Shenzhen Route Electronics in Mainland China" does not produce PCB boards for us, the other two chinese manufacturers, or in general. Thier own website clearly tells you this.

You also seem to not know the theroretical difference between mere PCB printing and PCB design. Mere PCB printing is not the same as full PCB engineering. How does an "EE" confuse the two?

#4: LINUX 4.9 is a base version of LINUX. How someone programs the OS to operate, look, feel, etc. is up to the programmer/engineer in studio environment. You should again know this as "EE", correct?

#5: You are not an Electronics Engineer. An Electronics Engineer would have known the basic computer principles above.

If you are conducting installations on vehicles, which it is verified that you are, this is the expected negative jerk reaction when we tell customers to purchase equipment on their own rather than from shops like yours.

Will await your electronics engineer project portfolio and CS degree for correction and review.

PS: It is common knowledge that we highlight desperate shops like yours often in the emails we send to customers to avoid them purchasing equipment from shops.

In that same following email chain, we offer them a link to provide reviews here. Some are good, some are bad. Most outside of UK do not use TrustPilot so we must link them here.

Sorry to hear business is not well or you are angry we inform customers to buy thier own equipment, but leaving nonsense accusations isn't the best way to build relationships.

In the time it took you to write silly nonsense, you could have messaged us directly to obtain customizations like custom boot logos, custom apps, discount pricing, etc. which could have helped your own business. You could have also navigated to "downloads" page and see we write custom firmware / applications which is something no one other than manufacturers can do.

Instead brain power was not used.

Good screen and tech support - e90 335i

Good screen and tech support when needed. Takes awhile to arrive but I'd rather have something better all around that I know will get updated and last. I kind of learned a painful lesson on a previous headunit from another company so here i am.

The install isn't really difficult unless you're somehow missing half of your brain.

Customer Support is Nonexistent

Original package was declared “lost” only after I reached out, they gave me an option to either receive a refund or a $40 rebate and a new one sent over. I opted for the $40 rebate but have heard absolutely nothing from them despite multiple attempts to reach out. I was not expecting the package quickly but for the amount of money I spent, this is absolutely unacceptable.

Edit: All I wanted was to know what was happening with my order and when I could get a new one, but they went ahead and canceled my order for no apparent reason.

Please do not order directly from any Asian manufacturer if it is not understood that customs delays and lost packages are a possibility. Instead proceed to local automotive shop or American based reseller.

I have cancelled this order and began initiating refund. You can see this on your billing statement within 7 days generally.

No one can really control a shipping company. Gave me a 40$ discount for it being lost in addition.

Some of the reviews here are pretty funny. Seems like there's some interesting individuals who thought they wouldn't reply back 😂

On a serious note, I'll be back if I get another European car in the future or something.

Poor customer service

Purchased the top spec unit based on other reviews; it came quickly, but the packaging was poor and there were zero installation instructions and not even information about the contents of the package (there are several cords i had no idea what they were for). I got it all installed and ran multiple wires throughout the interior dash and center console (AUX, USB, GPS, etc..) but the OEM system would not display. After contacting the whatsapp support, they informed me that they sent me a model for the wrong idrive version (id5 instead of id4) despite me giving them my VIN and the head unit information beforehand. They offered to exchange it, but it took a couple days for them to provide a return label, then another week for them to recieve the original unit, and then they still delayed sending the new unit even after the return was recieved.

This was supposed to be a Christmas present, and when I respectfully expressed my dissatisfaction with the lack of urgency to complete the exchange, they responded with many excuses about being one Asian company among thousands, in a warehouse with thousands of packages, and then tried to blame me for not telling them my idrive version even though they never specifically asked for that information and I had given them the VIN and head unit info originally. What is the point of giving the VIN if they don't verify compatibility? Then in their same response, they retaliated against my feedback by deciding to auto cancel my exchange. They did refund me in full (minus my packaging costs to return the item).

At this price point, I expected a bit better customer service and more maturity when dealing with customers. From this experience with BimmerDirect I can only imagine how poorly they might respond to warranty related issues. Very poor customer service in my opinion. I ended up going with another manufacturer and got my product quicker and for half the price, with better support.

In fact you reported our last reply to you here because it had screenshots of the emails exposing the truth. We had to reach out to TrustPilot to send them the emails directly and they allowed us to repost the below.

1. You sent a year and VIN range for a vehicle that produced NBT EVO using the BMW official decoder.

We sent you ID5 EVO. If your cars spec sheet is inaccurate and you are too careless to specify ID4 or ID5 at checkout like instructed, then you can not be surprised when sent exactly what your VIN instructs.

2. You did not tell us that you had ID4. WE informed you that YOU had ID4 after you received the item and contacted the free tech support line, and finally showed OUR tech your factory software.

3. Your return was received on December 22nd at midnight during the holiday season... In A US warehouse.

A day later, you sent an angry email during Christmas, a time when any person with functioning logic would know logistics companies like UPS, USPS, etc. are not open for business.

They do not work for us and you must live in a fantasy world if you think they're going to open their doors on Christmas Eve to inform us that the almighty "Disappointed Dan" has returned his package from Asia.

Despite this, we replied to you on Christmas Day a few hours later and refunded the order.

You were also sent a return label roughly 36 hours after being told you would, and were told this directly. This is not rocket science or anything ground-breaking. This is pretty standard, especially for overseas packages where customs paperwork is done for you.

4. 8GB device at "half the price" is comical and we am sure the specs are spoofed as they typically are in that price range.

Knowing that we are only 1/3 large manufacturers of these devices (none of which sell devices for that cheap since the cost of good RAM is especially increasing worldwide), we also know you will never receive a single update and can prove it as spoofed devices are routinley made for persons exactly like yourself. Gloating about a 2GB device spoofed with 8GB software parameters to a manufacturer is a special type of comedy.

5. "Packaging is poor" when the box is a custom, stylish package with clean M// theming, screen protectors on the device and thick foam bolstering on each side is hilarious. Do you know that people can readily see our packaging correctly?

6. "Ordered from another manufacturer" when you were just refunded a few days ago, and all manufacturers are also in Asia, is comical. Receiving a device from a made-up manufacturer during the holidays and almost overnight is impossible and also very comical. Asian companies ship packages in large pallets via the sea.

7. The other thousands upon thousands of worldwide customers who can think logically have benefited from the warranty normally. You were even refunded two days after the device arrived. You may be used to being to lie without correction, but do not be surprised when the truth is presented as it is above.

"Retaliation" is knowing all of this above, deciding to come here in an angry fit, and then try to report the reply showing screenshots which exposed that you did not tell the truth.

Outstanding product

Outstanding product. Had a slight issue where the rear camera package was lost by UPS but they resent it for free. Thats already more than what most would do. Takes around two or three days to get a response but that's obvious considering how many people are out there. Common sense says if you need immediate service you probably should go to a shop anyway.

Product wise I may be biased but I do recommend the MMI. Its very snappy. Not a fan of aftermarket screens but I do understand why some would want one. I personally just had a bad experience with an andream screen that was horrible.

Customer Support stopped responding

I have bought a MMI device to retrofit into my car, excited to get apple carplay. Initial attempts to install the device was unsuccessful, and I have contacted the customer hotline via email. After a few emails, the team suggested to communicate via whatsapp to fix the issue, where I have given my number through email. I have not received any further correspondence since. I have emailed them again, and sent a message through their website, however with nil response. I only wish to get this device working in my car and the lack of communication is frustrating.

Ordered BASE Linux device for 340i. Overall good. Nothing more nothing less

Is connection always perfect? No, be realistic. Not even the factory connection is perfect. If you want perfect than buy a new car 🤣

Is it like OEM seamless? No, but it's close enough. My factory rear camera still works, you can switch to the old menu, etc.

Will it transform your car into 2025 Maybach? No 🤣

However it is a decent device that will replace the old broken or small screen with the ability to have carplay. The warranty is good and they do post custom applications and software from time to time on their site which is something I don't see the others doing. I had alibaba special before this and unfortunately it died after a few months causing me to lose my money.

I truly believe you must have some type of mental handicap to think that it is device meant for anything else.

My friend bought one and hated it but then again this is the same type of person who uses physical paper maps when driving and takes his car to the dealership when the washer fluid is low... Do with this information as you will 🤣🤣

Awesome MMI box and service!

Awesome MMI box. Very easy to use and it feels premium in your hand. Installed it on my 2016 330i in one hour or so. I had a few questions on how to configure it to recognize my factory rear camera but they reached out to me via Whatsapp so that was remedied. Would buy again.

Order was canceled out of the blue with false justification

My order was canceled «on my request» out of the blue after I asked about other support channels than WhatsApp. Justification was their non-delivery policy for Germany, which doesn't make sense (I ordered to Switzerland) and was not explained. To me, the cause seems to be I was classified as an «uneasy» customer after asking for something special. This leads me to the impression they just want to sell units and keep the support effort as low as possible. My recommendation is not to waste your time with them. I ordered from BimmerTech now. More expensive, but I'm happy to pay the premium for good customer support and service. Two stars, because at least refunding worked well.

Dear BimmerDirect: Your response confirms my assessment. There was no attempt to be dishonest from my side. I permanently live in Switzerland for more than 14 years. My only "mistake", next to asking questions, must have been using a mail adress ending on ".de" for my PayPal account. Please note that I adjusted my rating down to one star beacuse of the personal insult in your reply. I wonder what happened to you that makes you act so aggressively towards a potential customer.

To all potential customers reading this: The information concerning their competitors is, as far as I know, misleading. BimmerTech's device works the same way as the one from BimmerDirect (audio via Bluetooth, no AUX needed if you use it for Android Auto or CarPlay - given a BT enabled headunit in your car). With their latest LCI version (upgraded Dual Core processor, 4GB RAM, BT 5 chipset), it should be superior performance-wise and also more future-proof (compared to the ARM STM32 mentioned on the BimmerDirect Website). If Bluetooth audio is not enough "high fidelity" for you, take a look at the MMIs from Mr12Volt. They send sound through the MOST (fibre optic) interface. It's not yet available for NBT EVO headunits or newer, but I was informed there will be something coming very soon. And they also replied swiftly without any hassle or insults, which is a great plus from my point of view 😎 Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with BimmerTech or any other vendor of retrofit MMIs, despite being a happy BimmerTech customer now.

This is a very great fairy tale except for the following:

1. We actively state we do not ship to Germany or any accounts with German data inputted.

You were then sent a polite email telling you this and cancelling your order.

You then came here to save face. Unfortunately, we will like to reply.

2. Your technical jargon does not make sense. You are confusing processor type with software infrastructure. Your RAM statement is not factual either.

3. The alternative you listed is 3x as expensive and merely a resold Chinese module from Shenzhen.

4. If anyone would like a transcript of the conversation, we can send it to you.

Overall you are proving why we do not ship to certain areas.

Have you considered that maybe we’ve experienced a pattern with persons like yourself over 10 years of manufacturing?

Pretty good kits.

Pretty good kit. Even though they're Taiwanese, their English is definitely better than average. It does take a few weeks to arrive but that's a given and they notify you of that before carrying out the order.

Product wise it's solid. Unless you're totally tech illiterate you'll get along fine. Really can't imagine someone liking the old BMW system better than these unless they have stockhold syndrome or are in their 70s.

Had to use the WhatsApp line once but I got a response a few hours later so no prob there.

Zero customer service

Zero customer service, have ignored my emails for weeks. Just check the support page, none of the links work. They have no intention of helping once they've got your money. These cheap Chinese units use the same dodgy software, to link to your phone, as something half the price. Don't do it.

Firstly,

We are Asian company, so the Chinese comment does not make much sense.

Secondly, it is not possible for any other manufacturer to use the same software as us. That again does not make sense and that is not how computers work.

Thirdly, email is NOT how to contact tech support. Tech support is contacted via the WhatsApp number in the manual you were given.

There is no WhatsApp message from a person named “OLI” in our records.

Fourth, there is no such thing as an 8GB device with the same specs, features, etc. for “half the price” unless the specs are being spoofed which is common by smaller resellers or smaller manufacturers.

Go find out for yourself and try posting a review when they ban you or reopen a store under new name. You are not smarter than them.

Lastly, If you are not happy with the device and feel so confident about this claim then you can send it back.

If you are actually a customer, it makes no sense to not use the WhatsApp tech support line, not request to return the device and then to come here to type misinformation.

If sending you 30 pages of PDFs (which you didn’t bother requesting or downloading) and providing tech support via WhatsApp (which you did not appear to use) and half a page of information before purchase (which you manually replied to) is not enough then the last thing you need is a BMW.

This is not logical seeing how thousands of others use these devices and everything else corrected above.

You can contact us to return the device and then enjoy a visit to your local automotive audio shop in your own country. We will refund the price paid and then add you to our Asian prohibition list so other Chinese or Taiwanese manufacturers can be aware.

Seeing how there is no order number or full name attached to this review, it is confusing how you expect anyone to help you. Likewise with the above inconsistencies.

Screen for a BMW F31

Ordered a Screen for a BMW F31,
Turned up eventually with no tracking info provided.
Had it installed professional by an independent car electrician.
It stopped working after 2 hours. I tried to contact the company through the message service, which apparently they don't use. Why don't they remove it from the website if they don't use it?
Made a claim through PayPal with a provided tracking service, lost the claim, because he got the tracking sent to a different address, scammer.
All I wanted was help, and none of this would have been necessary.
So no product and no money.
The owner is an aggressive, very rude man,
Let's see if he throws a torrent of abuse at this review.
Either way, he won't refund the money.
Be warned.

Hello,

This is not truthful. Your own bank and PayPal forced you to lose the dispute for that reason alone.

- Firstly, you contacted us demanding to keep the item and receive a full refund.

This is not logical and violates the terms of service with PayPal and any bank in existence.

You are not allowed to keep an item without returning it + receive a refund. You must return the item.

- When our technician was contacted by you, you did not tell him the name of the shop you had this device installed by nor the chance to actually fix the issue.

- The tech eventually gave up and recommended you simply return the device for a refund.

You refused many times.

- Instead you placed a dispute and we were forced to show PayPal and your bank all messages. These messages showed your behavior and refusal to comply.

This is why you lost the dispute.

You must have eventually realized this because you eventually sent back the device months later. At that point, the damage had already been done in the eyes of PayPal, your bank and us.

- We have thousands of customers worldwide a month, most who are happy.

The irony in calling us “scammers” when we simply instructed you to return an item for a refund is again very disturbing.

- There is no one owner of this company. We are an electronics manufacturing plant in Asia. You spoke with a very kind technician who made many attempts to help you.

Although PayPal awarded us both the transaction amount for the device, we will conduct a refund on our end since you eventually complied and sent the item back.

Allow (30) days to see this on your account.

Delete this review, learn the lesson and we will simply push the refund.

In the future, please do not repeat this behavior as both PayPal and your bank can permanently ban you from their platforms for suspected fraud.
