My child took the course. It was pretty easy to follow along and a good crash course in the basics of GameMaker. Perfect to get a complete beginner up and running, but not very far.

Courses are very easy to follow and come with a detailed transcript for when I can't use the sound.

Great sessions. Well structured and explains concepts and coding procedures, errors and best practice very well. Very nice for specific project areas. Still working through session, and will recommend additional areas of interest later. Thanks

Zenva is really good for small projects. It is about practice and discipline, so making projects help understand what we do. I like the short courses, it helps me to stay focused and feel accomplished.
What truly surprised me is that each lesson is well documented. I don't have to spend time looking for that exact part of the video where the code is, I can watch the video and then find the document with the code explained, that way I save time and I can check the code as much as I need it.

It's simple and easy to use. Great content, is up to date and relevant. Some courses are from the ground up, being a beginner works for me.

So far tutorials are simple enough for a complete beginner like me to start on. looking forward to apply what I've learn in future projects.

Zenva content stays updated and relevant!
I'm thankful that they the content stays fresh, for example, they recently updated their Godot courses for 4.3.
And the Roblox courses were great for me and my son to learn Lua.

(Game Development) The courses are very good but don't go far enough. There need to be more courses on advance work, and when a course claims to be on a "complete" game, it should be complete. Where's the UI creation, where's a full build ready for platform release? So far so good. But do what no one else does. REALLY finish the training. I have high hopes for you guys

Excellent tutorial guided with beginner steps and a friendly guide. I wish if the tutorial included a 2-player game.

To be honest I think a 4-star review is more appropriate, but teaching is hard (especially programming).
I like Zenva a lot. I was using Codecademy before, and I found that experience as nothing but disappointing.
In comparison, the collective teaching ability of the Zenva teachers is far superior to any alternative online source that I'm aware of, and I recommend them to anyone learning programming, especially if you would like to make games with that programming.
However, I do have some gripes.
Many of the teachers practice the "just watch me and you'll get it someday" approach that I hate with a passion.
I believe that there are much more efficient teaching methods that aren't so reliant on memorization and repetition, but this is more an issue with modern teaching in general, not just the Zenva teachers.
Another gripe I have is their insistence on keeping lesson durations to 10 minutes or less.
I understand the idea behind this, but I believe it often gets in the way of a more thorough learning experience. Programming is complicated and requires a good grasp on many important concepts, concepts which are often hurriedly explained due to the strict time constraint.
The 10 minute lesson makes sense in theory, though when it is less effective, you may as well go with the 20 or 30 minute lesson and develop a better understanding, which could potentially save time in the end.
Regardless of my complaints, Zenva is a good learning resource. One which, again, I recommend.
The linkedin features alone make it worth it in my opinion.
The surveys that find learning pathways for you are amazing as well. I appreciate small details like that a lot and they really help someone who's new to programming.
It seems to me that Zenva cares about teaching people to program and make games.

I went to college for animation and learned 3ds Max. I cannot afford to purchase the software however. This tutorial for Blender, which is shockingly free and comparable to Max, is very similar to the way I learned the basics of 3ds max in a classroom. I highly recommend anyone who is looking to learn Blender to check these out.

Edit: Links have been updated to lead to the relevant new course instead of a checkout screen, and if you click into the subscription it will show the cost (previously they had x% off or "try for free" banners with no mention of cost). However the overall value of the platform is very low compared to the cost per course/year.
There's no curation ability for the courses. You can rate individual courses, but good luck finding those ratings. There's no information on who's teaching a particular course (unless the instructor drops a introduction - which seems to be entirely at their discretion); find someone who's teaching style you like? Cool, hope you can find them again. Find someone who you just cannot stand to listen to? Good luck avoiding them.
Old review:
Went to access a purchased course, received a prompt that it was outdated and I could access the updated version through a link. The link led to a checkout screen for the yearly subscription, rather than to the updated version of the course it claimed it would go to. There is also no information about the pricing of said subscription, but it is impossible to accept the "free trial" without inputting credit card information.

Zenva is a great resource for learning from the word go. Easy instructions for not-so-easy concepts, combined with a platform that is not obtuse, make it a premier option for beginners.

Because I'm certain it matters, my studies have focused on Godot, so I can't speak to everything else the site offers.
My experience with the Basics of Godot course and 4 mini games course was quite good. The instructor clearly laid out what they were doing, step by step, explaining the basics as they went. The mini games were extremely basic, each focusing on a different concept, which is exactly what you want when starting off.
I loved this is contrast to my experience with certain youtube videos, and a course on Udemy, which involved them trying to teach so much at once, which lead to them rushing over a lot of foundational topics. I found myself simply copying what the instructors in those videos were doing, but not fully learning WHY I was doing what I was doing. These early Udemy courses were not like that, and I was loving it.
However, after finishing those courses, I went on to the first course for Mobile Games, as I want to create some fun little mobile apps with it. That course recommended I take the basics courses I had already taken. Cool. However, then the problems began. It felt like a solid 75% of the course was just poorly rehashing concepts from the beginner courses, which, hey, fine, I suppose I can use the refresher, though not for the majority of the course. Way too much time wasted setting up a simple game that should have been maybe 20% of the total course, not the bulk of it. There wasn't nearly as much time spent exploring and explaining the mobile specific concepts. Want to know about anchoring and resizing for mobile displays? Well, they talk about some of it, but I felt like that should have been a huge focus, something to explore and understand. A lot of the time, when it came to understanding what you were doing, the instructor would just direct you to use Godot's built-in reference material. Don't get me wrong, definitely useful to be taught how to access that material, but when it comes to what I'm being taught, I would prefer the course I'm paying for also teach me with their own clearly presented explanation. None of this was helped by the less-than-great audio of this new instructor.
Then I got back to the old instructor with another course on the basics for turn based rpgs, and while there was a bit of rehashing older concepts, I felt like we were starting to race through some newer concepts without really covering the why. It felt more and more like I was back to the Youtube/Udemy tutorials that just have you copy what they are doing, with minimal explanation, or rushed explanations. Once again I started to feel like I was just copying without fully understanding.
I feel a lot of these online instructors miss the point of actual courses, and focus too much on letting the students experience "results" as quickly as possible. You could just post the sheets of code for a game and let me copy it all down, and in a way I suppose I will have "made a game," but I didn't learn HOW to make a game. I want courses to take the time to explain concepts with more depth. As it stands, oftentimes I feel I am being given a concept and getting a brief explanation as to why, but what I would love is for the concept to be explored so I can think of all the possible ways I could use it. I hope that makes sense. I don't feel like taking the time to going over a rough draft of this review just to make sure I've perfectly explained myself. After all, I'm not an online reviewer being paid by people who expect a certain level of detail and quality (this is my frankly lazy attempt to give Zenva a little guff).
Look, I don't hate Zenva, and I'll be sticking with it (I'll update my review if things change). When it comes to learning Godot in a course-based format, I think it is probably one of, if not the best resources out there. Unfortunate that just isn't a super high bar to clear, in my experience. There is still plenty to learn, and hopefully as I continue on through the courses, things will all come together. But for a site that really pushes itself as being more professional, a lot of these courses can end up feeling a bit amateur in their structure.
