Fading black on the Standard Plates - replacement plates also faded
I have bought many number plates from Plates for Cars over the years and historically they have been excellent quality. However I bought a set for my car in late 2024 (I ordered 'standard plates') and I noticed that the black numbers/letters on the plates were starting to fade and looked washed out. I compared these new plates to ones I had ordered years before and the older plates remained jet black. I contacted Plates for Cars in the middle of 2025 and they asked for photos etc and replaced the plates. I assumed this must have been caused by a batch of faulty material.
However a few months later the same fading / washed out look came again. I contacted Plates for Cars again and this time they were more evasive, saying "videos hadn't been received", "waiting for a response from the quality department" etc. Finally they have gone quiet no longer replying to my emails.
It looks from the outside like they must have changed their raw materials or manufacturing process (presumably to take out cost) and gone too far. To have the same error occur more than 6 months apart is not a coincidence. Also them not replying says it all really.
Don't say you were not warned!!

Scam Company!
I ordered a set of plates but cancelled them as soon as I ordered them because my customer informed me he no longer needed them but this Scam Company refused to respond to my e-mails so I was left £55.97 out of pocket! Do not buy from these scam artists! There is no 14 days return from them! They are all and out liars! The exact same plates were £20.00 cheaper with My Showplates!
I have had the plates for three years…
I have had the plates for three years now on the car. No problem whatsoever. Packaged securely. It was a bit of a palaver to get the protective film off the plate fronts, but aside from that, super. I used 3M double sided sticky thingies to affix the plates to the car: not an issue after three years.
The brilliant thing is that they are the only company I have found who use the correct black colour for the country identifier pursuant to the Paris Convention 1909. Other companies make the country identifier in blue, which does not adhere to international law.
scam artist
Reflective? More like regrettable.
If you’re in the market for number plates that look like they’ve been steeped in weak tea and aged in a UV tanning bed, then congratulations—you’ve found your supplier. For the rest of us who expect our plates to resemble something vaguely white, steer clear of Plates for Cars.
I ordered a set of plates that arrived looking like they’d already done a tour of duty on a 2003 Vauxhall Astra. Creamy, dull, and about as reflective as a soggy digestive biscuit. When I raised the issue, I was treated to a masterclass in deflection: apparently, the plates are “German-engineered” and “superior to Asian brands,” which is a weird flex when the product looks like it’s been printed on recycled cornflakes boxes.
Customer service was a journey. A journey through denial, condescension, and the occasional passive-aggressive geography lesson about UV rays and pigment science. At one point, I was told “there is no such thing as off-white” which is bold coming from a company whose plates are the visual definition of off-white.
Returns policy? Oh, it’s a treat. You can return them—if they’re unused. Which is perfect for a product that you only discover is terrible once it’s on your car. So unless you’re psychic or own a time machine, you’re stuck. And since it’s a number plate, it’s not like you can pop it back in the box and re-gift it.
In summary:
• Poor quality product
• Customer service that moonlights as a philosophy club
• Returns policy designed by Kafka
• A plate that reflects nothing but regret
Avoid. Unless you’re collecting disappointing rectangles.
They don’t honour their 14 day guarantee
Probably the poorest level of customer service i have experienced. Faulty plates arrived and i sent an email to this company asking for a refund. No response whatsoever. I have now sent them six emails and they have not responded. Their website says 14 day refund guarantee but they do not respond so it is impossible to return anything to them. I will never use this seller again and i strongly recommend avoiding them.
No reply - warranty
Used this company since 2019-2023 and had no problem.
Plates bought in 2023 have now showed signs of lifting due to manufacture. Website states a three year warranty.
Email sent via web form (not ideal) - no reply.
I will take my business and cash elsewhere.
Customer service is key - companies seem to forget that.
Plate faulty - Sales team didn't care!
The backing started to peel around the hole and let water ingress onto the plate causing the letters to bleed. The Sales office advised I hadn't drilled the hole properly and should have used a "very sharp drill bit". The bit came from them as part of of the fixing kit I additionally purchased - did they sell me a blunt bit? They have not responded! AVOID THIS COMPANY.
Avoid this company. Zero customer service and poor products
I ordered a set of plates for my car. I went for ones with a border. They arrived in good time but unfortunately the spacing around the border was uneven and for me I will not put them on the car as they are not right. I am sure this is down to the printing and the plates not being lined up properly. The bit that has really got to me is that I have emailed the company about this and also attempted to use the contact us part of their website which fails every time. Nobody has replied which means £45 of my money has gone up in smoke. I wish I had seen their poor ratings before placing an order. Hard to see how they are still in business. Once bitten twice shy I believe the saying is.
Ordered plates paid £80 & numbers peeling off
Ordered plates paid £80 for a set , within a week the numbers started peeling off the rear plat , They agreed that i had not drilled into the letters . Emailed sales at platesforcars co uk. no offer of replacement or refund . sent another email stating "Since you have not resolved my issue or offered me a refund or replacement , I therefore reject the goods. The goods are available for collection." Then claimed on my Credit card . refund issued by Master Card. Avoid this company

Poor service
Poor service.
Ordered plates which have beeb unused and the cover still on them.
One has a chip out of it and they want me to pay for another one.
Used the company several times in the past but wont use again
AVOID
AVOID
1 star is too much for these people. Recently bought new plates and to say they are a disgrace is an understatement, there are blemishes and scores all over both plates, there is also a blue line/shadow at the edges of the letters and numbers. I paid £60 and these should have been perfect. I have now emailed them 4 times and sent all photos they asked for and I am being told they won't do anything about it so it's now in the hands of my solicitor and trading standards.
Not good for EV plates
Not very good for EV plates - the green doesn’t cover the numberplate properly and the green is a faded out pale green… would not buy EV plates from here again…
Careful what you order
Ordered what I thought were road legal plates, as stipulated on the order and the invoice, yet car failed the mot as the letters/numbers too close together. Company don’t want to know, saying it was my fault as I should have requested “spacing”, yet this doesn’t appear on the order summary, and has never been an issue in the past. Reported to trading standards and dept transport.
Absolute Rubbish Company
Ordered some plates from this company as I liked their online design feature. Arrived and the printing registration was out of fit, (the blue text underneath the black text was printed in a different position so it looks like ghosted text). Submitted a form on their website several times, no answer. No phone number available for platesforcars.co.uk or Samantha Jane Howell the MD. Numberplate have ended up in the bin as they are poor quality. Don't trust the e Trusted Shops reviews as you cannot contribute or write a review regarding the goods you purchased.
Yet another faulty plate from platesforcars.co.uk
I’ve had my gel lettered plates for 18 months and randomly a letter has fallen off. I’m not expecting any resolution given other reviews on here, so that’s £70 down the drain. 😡
Won’t ever buy plates from this company again
I have used this company for the last 5 years and wont be using them again! Supplied the plates for my car all arrived ok but 6 months in the rear plate has streaks down the numbers and letters. Emailed them in July 24, no response, emailed again a further 3 times with pictures and finally get a response in November 24 saying because there are drill holes there is nothing they can do! Won’t be ordering a replacement with them or any plates in the future!
Not good when it goes wrong…
…. and therefore, a far from positive experience.
Had used these guys some years ago for a specialist design without any issue, so asked them to repeat a previous order for the same vehicle, as after 6 years the plates were starting to look tired.
All went through ok, but noticed a significant increase in both cost and shipping fees since the the last order. Thought nothing more about it and the plates duly turned up after a few days.
All looked to be in order, however on closer inspection, noticed that they had forgotten to add the BSAU number, thus making the plates nothing more than show plates, an instant MOT failure, and illegal to use on a public road.
This is where the problems started. Having contacted them immediately to advise them of their error, I received an email back stating that it was my fault for not specifying that they were to be Road legal. I argued that I had asked them to repeat a previous order which they held on file, for road legal plates, same design, same registration etc, and they accepted the order and my money on that basis of sale.
I was then told that the rules had changed, (utter rubbish) and an exchange of emails followed between us with them sticking to their story and it was basically my problem, and not theirs. I offered to send them back to have the missing legal requirement added, and gave them a further option to simply reprint them as per my previous order, but was told that they wouldn’t do that, and I would have to reorder and pay again.
I opened a dispute with PayPal who were worse than useless and didn’t want to get involved, despite dragging it out for weeks (another one to watch out for, as you have no Buyer Protection even when you jump through hoops with them) and I opened a further dispute with TrustedShop, their affiliate trading partner in Germany, who, like PayPal didn’t want to get involved either. I then spoke to my Bank as any further attempt at dialogue between myself and PfC had been totally ignored by them.
My Bank fortunately managed to reclaim the money back in full from this shady operator, and I then received about a month later a threatening email from them suggesting Court action. I told them to bring it on, and that is the last that I heard from them.
Avoid this company like the plague. Either complacency or a change of ownership must have crept in here, as their attitude towards their customers when they have made an error is diabolical. This operation is a classic example of caveat emptor!
As a final further word of warning, by using PayPal as a payment platform, you forfeit all your protections and rights under S.75 of the consumer credit act that you would have had if you had used your credit card directly to make the purchase. Not many people realise this until you get caught out, and then nobody wants to take some ownership and responsibility of the issue. PayPal Account was duly closed in protest after over 20 years as a customer as a result of their inaction as well, be warned!!
